There are two points there.

If people believe that it is their duty to save others mortal soul, then I understand why they think they have to convert people. But annoying people in shopping centres is not a great way of going about it.

If people are forcing their children to act as missionaries then that’s a perfect example of the evils of religion.

I don't really agree with Rightey's post, he was replying to someone who felt manipulated and taken advantage of by organised religion: of course Starbreaker is going to want religious people to leave him alone and find evangelism distasteful. You can't really flip that round and say "oh no don't be mean about us". Organised religion isn't the victim in that interaction.

So either they have free will and chose this path. No slack given.

Or they're groomed into a way of life from a young age. You've just highlighted everything wrong and immoral about religion.

Despite my disdain for religion I do find the discussion about omnipotent beings quite interesting. There are some fun paradoxes that, whilst a bit throwaway, easily demonstrate the issue of there being a god.

Could God create an object so heavy even He couldn't lift it?

If yes - He is not all-powerful as He cannot lift it.
If no - He is not all-powerful as He cannot create it.

Religious people often explain away plotholes by saying things like “God works in mysterious ways” or “mere mortals like us could not possibly understand the mind of God”

And yet so many of them are also 100% sure that not only do they follow the one true faith but also that they understand their holy scriptures.

Added to that, many religious people seem to pick parts of their chosen religion to follow and ignore other bits they maybe don't agree with, or think some aspects need changing. What if the gods want people to behave in the way they originally stated? Plus you've got contradictory religious text that's either the literal word of a god to be followed in full, or flawed because humans interpreted it so should only to be used as a rough guide, or somewhere in between depending on who you ask. Makes bugger all sense to me.

I’ve spoken about this before last time the topic came up - I’m a Christian but probably not what you would call an especially evangelical one. I don’t see it as my role to pester other people into converting to Christianity, and I don’t think I’d be very good at that if I tried.

Ultimately it’s something that I believe encourages me to live a better life than I might otherwise have done - in terms of being more generous with what I have to offer etc. I don’t obviously know if this is actually the case as I can’t compare how I would have lived the last 15 years of my life if I had carried on as an atheist, but I know there are helpful things I have done in that time which I can’t have seen me doing otherwise.

There are many many problems with some aspects of “organised religion” and that is something which cannot be ignored, but I do believe that the vast majority of people who follow Christianity just want to be good people, and that is probably true for most of the major faiths as well.

I know you don’t mean it this way, but that sounds a little like the “You’re an atheist? So why don’t you murder people?” line I have heard people say before.

Everyone has to live their lives the way they want to. As long as you’re not forced into it and it doesn’t hurt anybody else, then it’s all down to individual choice.
