What unlockables excited you most?

I was listening to the GoldenEye 007 soundtrack this morning and when the Egyptian theme came on, I was reminded of how pumped I was when I finally unlocked that level. Many months of battling 00 Agent mode vindicated, at last. That got me thinking about other secrets levels/features I was similarly excited about.

The one I always come back to was the X-Cup in F-Zero X. Initially, I was under the impression it was another cup, like the jack, queen, king and jokes cups before it. But then it suddenly became clear what it truly was; a random level generator that could, at times, throw up a course that was capable of wiping out all 30 racers. No race the same, ever again. Genius, and I was massively disappointed that they neglected to include something like it in F-Zero GX.

Mr. Game & Watch in Smash Bros. Mêlée. This was before the era of the Internet, so all I had to spoil his existence was a grainy tips book giving me his name. No pictures or anything, and my lack of familiarity with the G&Ws meant I had no idea what he’d look like. Whatever thoughts I had were proved very very wrong.

Of course, nowadays all Smash characters get announced before release to avoid leaks, and many other games cut those parts out to sell as DLC. :evil:

Not sure if they count as unlockable as such but the Lost World levels on DKC2 still have an air of mystery and impossibility to them to me (even though I've long since memorised how to finish them!) Likewise, but to a lesser extent, the Special stages of SMW.

Drumstick and TT still have mythical status for me because I've never unlocked them.

Stone Golem was a personal highlight as the level / difficulty combo that you needed to beat to get him took me a particularly long time, and I remember specifically the day I managed it. He's my character of choice to this day largely because of that.

I managed to unlock Invincibility in Perfect Dark, which I was always pleased with. Managed to get most of the cheats in that game (as opposed to eventually using the codes for GoldenEye). Though I was never able to do the Carrington Institute on PA.

I was one bloody time trial short for T.T. too. Might have been Treasure Cove. I miss absolutely rinsing a game like that.

I always loved unlocking more characters in fighting games, but yeah this is all dlc nowdays which is a crying shame as I used to find unlocking characters and different outfits really made me play them again and again.

Unlocking Ninja in Snowboard Kids

Our memory pak didn't work so we had to do it every time

The AX Cup in F-Zero GX. It required absolute racing perfection on the hardest difficulty settings in every other cup in the game - control dexterity, track knowledge and strategies that you could only garner by many repeat plays (for we had no YouTube gaming gurus to consult). It took me several weeks of daily play, which was oftentimes incredibly frustrating due to all the times I strawberry floated up, to unlock it. The feeling of elation as each cup was polished off was wonderful! And then it turned out to be a piss easy cup. :lol:

Also getting the legendary level awards in Star Wars Battlefront II so the award weapons were always equipped by default. Broke the game because the award pistol was a 1-2 hit kill and could lock on from massive distance :lol:

Agreed.

The unlockable characters in some games, like Tekken 2 for example were often the best characters in the game, I used to be almost unstoppable whilst playing as Baek.

Soul Calibur also has some excellent unlockable characters, plus the fan art gallery was a nice touch.

Then there's the unlockable outfits in DOA :datass:

Chastity belts.

All the ones in Timesplitters 2.

The missions where you play as Cyborg Ninja in Metal Gear Solid: Special Missions.

Dolphins in Wave Race
The Moon in Blast Corps
Mirror Mode in Diddy Kong Racing
The Nuke in Turok

(N64 had the best unlocks I guess)

Unlocking Gigan as a playable character in Godzilla on the PS4 was exciting as I love that version of the character so much.

Perfect Dark cheats, and Super Smash Bros. Melee characters come immediately to mind. I worked damn hard unlocking all but about three of the PD cheats. strawberry float me that was a tough game.

A 13 year old pubescent me getting kicks out of unlocking the skater chick wearing a bikini in THPS 4...

But yes I agree with unlocking characters in fighting games. Made it my mission to unlock every character in Tekken 4 which I did! Took so many damn hours but I got there... And then a couple days later my save corrupted and I lost it all. At least 1 of my controller got up close and personal with the wall as a result.

Unlockables in games where they significantly change the game do the opposite of excite me. I don't want to have to play for 200 matches or whatever until I get access to my main. Take Ultimate, for example, it's going to launch with 74 characters but only 8 are available for the first match.

My friends and I are looking forward to trying out Simon/Richter, Ridley, Inkling, and another wants to stick with Lucina. Guess we'll have to put those games on hold for a session or two.

Give me cosmetic unlocks all day, or push them to another mode or whatever, sure. But going round a friend's house only to find they only had half the roster sucked.

Wholeheartedly disagree. Or at least I would have done, before Ultimate, when unlocking new characters and stages was one of the most thrilling aspects of the game for a solo player. I’m less sure now that they’ve all been revealed before launch, but it’ll still be nice to have a marker of progress.

And hey: with 70-odd characters, it would be a right shame if you only played with a couple! Link seems to have changed a lot, give him a go.
