I dunno about hit, but I recently played through Surge 2 which was brilliant. A refreshing take on soulslikes and dare I say that I even enjoyed more than certain entries from Souls itself.

I feel like Remnant would be better survival horror, the soulslike elements almost seem thrown on. I only spent a couple hours on it tho and it was still fun. Might get back to it in the future.

Will prob buy when it drops in price but thought it looked bobbins. Can imagine it's much better in coop.

Might have to retry it now it's on Gamepass. Bounced off it so hard the first time.

Better not be lieing to us Taf!

It's more of a third-person action game with Souls-like elements. I certainly don't think it's survival horror as you mow through enemies constantly and things like inventory/ammo management isn't a thing, but it is true that it's not a straight Souls ripoff.

I did exactly the same thing first time round (though I got it for free on Epic). Once you're through that first hour or so it gets really good really quick.

One caveat is that the final boss is so utterly gooseberry fool I never finished it. But up to literally the final encounter it's great.

EDIT: It's also surprisingly short. Looking at my time played I got to the final boss in 14 hours.

I liked how tense it felt at the start, especially that sewer area, but then dying and having to repeatedly go through it kinda ruined the mood of it all. The game itself feels really solid tho. I just wasn't feeling the soulslike elements.

And it's free on PS right now. Love The Witness. That and Obra Dinn are awesome.

Vampyr for me. I loved everything about it except for the difficulty spikes. Wish i could have dropped the difficulty down mid game, I porbably would have been able to finish it then. The dialogue and butterfly effect system were excellent, as was the tone of it all.

I think a better term for these kind of games is “middle market”. Titles made in a studio system but not pushed as major releases.

Compared to the 360 and PS3 era the middle market is in the best state it has been in since the end of the PS2 era.
Studios are funding more niche, experimental and risky titles again.

Japan, the kings of the middle market, have seen a massive resurgence over the last 5 years with retailers and websites alike being flooded with stock for middle market JRPGs, visual novels and action games.

The wider choice of middle market or “AA” titles may be why there appears to be a drop in the number of massively successful breakout titles. There is more completion and we are no longer forced into buying the same thing.
A net positive overall let’s just hope this drop in individual recognition doesn’t lead to studios once again pushing for AAA trend chasing like in the 360 era as that would be to everyone’s loss.

How far did you get? I felt the same early on but I'd had too much by the third or fourth new area at which point it was really dragging.

God, i really cant remember now, its been a couple of years. I remember fighting Mary (i think) and having a bad time, but it was some bloke that was a massive slog to get to each time (and with less and less consumables each time) that finally had me deciding that enough was, indeed, enough.
