Carlos, you make a fine point. I actually believe The Hobbit will be this year's biggest film. But this thread is about which of the comic-book adaptations will be the biggest.

It would have to more than double the takings of The Dark Knight for that to happen. That would be unprecedented for a sequel that had already grossed more than 99% of other movies. The Pirates of the Caribbean, Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter films, all of which rank among the highest-grossing movies of all time, didn't do anything like the numbers you're suggesting. Even the final Harry Potter film only made $300m more than the next biggest Potter. Nowhere near twice the amount, let alone 2.5 times.

Am I the only one who keeps thinking of Diddy Kong Racing whenever I see The Dark Knight Rises in its abbreviated form, TDKR?

batman.

i think spiderman's problem is the trailer, where we see the first person view of him flyng through new york and we're supposed to be amazed, where i find myself thinking i've seen this all before.

tbh i cba watching parker become spiderman again, its been done.

Batman. There just seems to be more of a buzz about it. Regarding Spiderman, I think it'll do alright. It's just hampered by the fact that the last films are still relatively recent and this year we've got a lot of very high profile comic book films. Spiderman just seems a bit lacklustre in comparison. (Judging by what I've seen so far)

I know these things aren't quantifiable, but as far as I can see TDKR is the most anticipated movie in recent film history. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it knocks Avatar off the top of the workwide box office takings list.

Oh I'm not denying the hype for TDKR is huge, but I think it's a part to Heath's death. I still think TDK would have done really well, but the media coverage around the time certainly helped TDK break records and get people interested in Nolan's Batman trilogy.

Don't know about knocking Avatar off it's perch though, wasn't that massively helped by 3D ticket prices or does not factor into it?

I'd love to see TDKR knock Avatar off its number one spot but do you really think this film will gross $2.8 billion? The only reason blue dances with wolves is number one is because everyone went to see it in IMAX and 3D so the tickets cost twice or even three times what they usually do.

3D and Imax tickets do not cost two or three times more than standard. 3D is roughly 25-33% more expensive and Imax is not £21.

Really! I take it back, then. 3D is £8.85 at my cinema on a weeknight.

It cost me £13 to see Avatar in 3D, and £11 to see the Avengers after a 10% discount.

I'm going to be honest, I pulled that out of my arse to look big. Could still happen though.

What the gooseberry fool is going on with these odeon prices? You'd think that the same company would have the prices throughout the UK :fp:

Yeah I was browsing around their site the other day and noticed the prices seem to vary region by region.

All that really matters is that TDKR is going to be the best of the three films and probably the best film of the year to boot.

Couldn't care less which one makes the most money.

Looks like The Avengers is doing pretty well:
'The Avengers' has biggest opening weekend ever with $200 million

Hollywood's superhero summer has arrived with a vengeance.

The Marvel Comics mash-up "The Avengers" launched the summer movie season with a $200.3 million opening weekend domestically, by far the biggest debut ever.

If distributor Disney's revenue estimate Sunday holds when the final weekend count is released Monday, "The Avengers" would be the first movie ever to haul in $200 million in a single weekend.

A $200 million total for every movie in release is considered a great weekend for the business as a whole, so "The Avengers" redefines the standards for a blockbuster debut.

"The Avengers" shot past the previous record of $169.2 million for the debut of last year's "Harry Potter" finale.

With $441.5 million overseas since last week, "The Avengers" worldwide total climbed to $641.8 million.

Going to go see it again this week

It's doing well on Rotten Tomatoes too:
