Found out today that I'm being furloughed along with the vast majority of my team.

Work is topping up the difference so I'm on 100% basic salary so that's decent of them although probably about 45% of my total earnings comes from commission and overtime, thankfully my outgoings are easily covered by the basic salary and I've a healthy emergency savings built up too.

Hopefully this nightmare ends sooner than I fear it could go on for, I'm not stressed currently but I'll certainly start to worry by the end of June.

I am working from Home. Initially, I thought it would be fun and relaxing but just a month later I realized how wrong I was.

Still have a job for now but if we don't fold this year I'd be amazed. All feels very pointless at the moment.

I've been at my girlfriends things are getting a bit awkward because I'm a bit messy and she's super tidy. So little things I don't think about about like leaving my shoes next to the sofa and not opening the curtains in the morning are driving her up the wall.

Leaving your shoes next to the sofa? What are you a strawberry floating animal!

You'd be getting some serious erection points if you did that round my place. :capnscotty:

That might technically mean you're employed though and so could be furloughed as well and got 80%.

Self employed people with a handful of clients are properly strawberry floated. But hey we pay less tax, provided we earn anywhere near enough to even owe any tax to begin with. :simper:

Need to get my ecommerce gooseberry fool in order and start doing the whole support local businesses from home thing. Unfortunately my body is saying 100% nope at the moment.

If you're a limited company why dont you furlough yourself? Or are you sole trader?

Sole trader.

Unfortunately limited company contractors with one client aren't legal anymore. Regardless if a limited company were to for example pay via dividends rather than a director's payroll (that the company couldn't afford anyway) due to limited cash flows then the government wouldn't pay that afaik, and 80% of some kind of PAYE income would be pittance anyway.

It's weird, a limited company can't necessarily be a in position to even pay the minimum wage to a director (even though as a director you are an employee and so your own company owes you the minimum wage), most directors basically just waive this right while the business is young and take a dividend or a director's loan instead, there's three different ways of "getting paid" so to speak.

I was going to move to Ltd in April this year to pay some money into that structure but due to some delays I haven't been paid for that yet. I'll probably still do it.

No idea how the government plans to deal with the complexities of directors paying themselves under this scheme!

For self employment support you can only get paid 80% of your trading profit based on 18-29 tax return, unfortunately I didn't make a profit last year so I get nothing, but that doesn't mean the business doesn't need revenue to continue operating and providing a service to the public/economy meaning without that support a lot of sole traders are going to go bust. Meanwhile companies with many employees that also operate without turning a profit (I.e. Break even or a small loss) or even making a yearly loss still get government support, simply because they spend more money.

There are plenty of examples of famous companies that don't actually make any profit, they merely exist to provide work ultimately. It's that difference between gross and net profit that means a company might be able to continue running but make no actual returns for investors including company directors with shares etc. I'm in the same position and under the current rules I'm not eligible. The government has done this to reduce instances of fraud (I.e. Fake companies that aren't run with any intention of making a profit, or launder money etc) but it's still pretty shitty for anyone working a challenging sector. Revenue (I.e. Sales) is still going to go down across the board and there's no help for those people. So yet again the government is doing more to support big business and corporations than individual businesspeople or startup companies. Anyone who just started a business recently and for example has had to close their shop while still paying business rates and rent are properly strawberry floated, one of my clients is one such example.

That's a bit nuts tbh, my gf would never complain about something like that, then again she does 90% of the household chores.

How can you suck at them? Most of them don't require what could be deemed skill.

I don't open my curtains because I don't want people seeing into my house.

I remember when I was growing up there was one house on my street where they pretty much never opened the curtains and we used to run passed it because we were convinced there was some kind of psychopath living there.

I hope that when this is all over companies give people to work WFH or go back to the office as like you not everyone is happy with staying at home and prefer the feeling of having a separate place of work.

Oh I dunno about that, if you'd ever seen me trying to dust, change the cat's litter or wash dishes you'd say I didn't have the skill to do them properly.

I still do them though, because I'm not a dickhead. :shifty:

I thought they were factoring in commission using some sort of average from the last X amount of months?

I'm still going into work as normal. I'm a maintenance engineer in a central London office building so it's very odd at the moment.

Also, first post in god knows how many years! So, err, hi!

Well, "gross motor co-ordination skills" generally refers to simple movements like picking up a cup of tea without spilling it, which I fail at when I'm unwell.

Sometimes I can't even reliably piss into a toilet, that's a pretty basic task. Brain is screwed up see, connect that to your nervous system and guess what happens. Failing at basic everyday tasks.

Brain is pretty important organ.

Fwiw I tidy up btw, since that generally involves moving things around and it doesn't really matter if I drop them or do it incredibly slowly. Most things are in some sort of order because I put them there and kept them there. Organising is a mental/logical skill, rather than a purely physical or communication one, for example, things I strawberry float up all the time.

Weirdly I'm super good at really tiny detailed things (fine motor skills, like drawing), it's the gross motor things I'm clumsy and unreliable at or get me exhausted really quickly, but can do gooseberry fool like paint miniatures of play guitar or type for days. There's a medical distinction.

Since we were talking about shopping, I knock stuff over and drop things in shops. All the useless information flying around causes me physical and emotional distress. My brain can only handle doing so many things at once, even basic things like hearing and talking at the same time. So I only accompany for the shopping about 1 in 4 times, otherwise it's just not worth it. It hardly bothers my partner at all since she's closer to "normal".

A normal person doesn't spend literally 4 hours choosing a product in a hardware store.

I'm still confused by why that rules out 90% of household tasks.

But I guess if she's happy with it, cool.

I was exaggerating massively.

I just asked my girlfriend and she complained that I distracted her causing her to lose a stitch.

Trust me, we've been together for 10 years and I'm just self deprecating. I do help with things like the gardening and clearing anything and everything away. It's my way of saying I'm grateful - strawberry float men who don't even acknowledge the effort their partner puts in, whatever that is, that's when it's a real problem. If you're genuinely not good at some things around the house? Fine, do some other stuff to help. For example, manage all the household finances, pay the bills ever month, write to such and such to make them do their gooseberry fool, speak on the phone when your partner is too anxious to do that... Even though you have a sensory/communication disability.

Tl;dr I'm a dick, Red knows best

Ah she just came back to me, she said she'd rather do none of the chores like anyone else. Does that answer your subtext?
