PostWhich Game Boy remake would you like to see next?
by Jamo3103 » Sun Sep 29, 2019 7:02 pm

Like a lot of people on this forum I've been playing Link's Awakening over the last week and having a brilliant time. I think they've done a superb job of modernising the game whilst still keeping everything that made the original so good, including the compact level design which lends itself so well to handheld play. I've also really enjoyed playing Samus Returns and Pokémon Let's Go in recent times, both again essentially remakes of Game Boy games.

This got me thinking about which Game Boy (or Game Boy Colour) game I'd like to see get the remake treatment next and I thought I'd ask the forum as well.

To get the ball rolling I've picked two of my favourites...

1) Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins.

I'm probably biased because this is the first Mario game I played properly but this is still my favourite 2D Mario game. It has so much creativity in terms of level design and enemies and it's such a shame it has mostly been consigned to the past and forgotten about; particularly given how bland and samey the NSMB series is. I would love to see this fully remade, ideally in an art style that is faithful to the original and not the style of the NSMB games. It could also lead into remakes of the Wario Land games which would definitely be high up there on my list too!

2) Dragon Warrior Monsters

I mostly bought this at the time because I wanted more Pokémon but it's actually a very different game and a truly excellent one at that. I regrettably sold my copy to a friend several years later and would love to play it all over again, without the technical limitations of the original Game Boy hardware. It would definitely need a lot more work to modernise it and is probably far less likely than Mario but I think it would be really cool to see this series revived on Switch.

Over to you GRCade!

If you have something that will play Gameboy Color games played try Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins DX. It's not a major remake like Link's Awakening, but it's a fanmade DX upgrade kind of like what Link's Awakening had on GBC. And you can play as Luigi.

Castlevania: The Adventure was remade for Wiiware but I wouldn't mind seeing remakes of Castlevania II: Belmont's Revenge or Castlevania Legends as well.

I skipped the Oracle games so I’d really like Grezzo to use their LA engine for that...maybe after fine tuning the frame rate :shifty:

It would definitley make sense to use the LA engine again (after fine tuning it, as you say) - The Oracles games would be great, perhaps they could even use it to finally make the third Oracles game that was originally planned.

I know its not the question, but there are a lot of GBA games I'd like to see get a remake.

Boring typical answer but I'd love to see the Zelda Oracle games remade. Just really quirky games full of so much heart and detail considering the limitations. A remake could work so well to bring out more of the lesser known qualities of the games.

If Gameboy Advance doesn't count, then Jamo3103 and Tomous have the right idea with the Oracle games. Would be great to see Subrosia in LA graphics, and it would be awesome if they released the third Oracle game along with it.

If Gameboy Advance DOES count, pretty sure y'all know what my favourite 2D Zelda game is by now ;)

Oh... nice thread idea!

I'd love to see O'Leary Manager 2000 (GBC, Ubisoft) for the Switch. It was a follow-up to David O'Leary's Total Soccer 2000, adding simple management content to the fast, fluid top-down football fun. I played through many seasons on the GBC version, tinkering with tactics and enjoying the match action.

I'd also like to re-play Looney Tunes Collector: Martian Alert! - and the sequel, Looney Tunes Collector: Martian Revenge! - (GBC, Ubisoft) on the Switch. They were flip-screen puzzle / action titles featuring the cast of Looney Tunes. Simple but fun, with lots to collect and some neat ditties.

...and the original Golf and Tennis GB remakes would be neat. Simple, easy-to-play fun. The small, chibi-style characterisations and poppy lil' tunes should remain, too!

Everyone is talking about Six Gold Coins, but SML1 was my first game ever and in retrospect is batshit. A straight remake/remaster would probably be a bit short/an eShop offering, but it might still be worth it to see a moai with legs trying to crush Mario with boulders, and I would love to see a few more levels added on, Donkey Kong on GB (another valid option?) style.
