It doesn't have to be the year that featured your favourite game, console etc., just when you think back to years in your life, does a particular year leap out at you when it comes to video games?

For me, it's 1996. The 32-bit era was in full swing, gaming was becoming more accepted outside of ItS jUsT fOr KiDs, games magazines were are their peak for me with the likes of golden-era CVG and OPM...I was 10 years old, discovering the PS1 and loving every second of it. Put me back in front of the TV on Christmas morning playing Pandemonium!, please. sigh

Honourable Mention: 1992 (SEGA vs. Nintendo) & 2004 (so many huge games released)

Probably 2004. Half Life 2 and Vampire Bloodlines. Doesn't get much better.

And with Resident Evil 4 released the following January, probably the best 3 months of gaming ever.

Edit - Doom 3, San Andreas, Burnout 3, Far Cry, Def Jam 2, MGS3, KOTOR, Hitman Contracts, CS Source.

strawberry float me, 2004 was genuinely incredible

Hard to pin down a year so I'm gonna cheat and say the early GBA era will forever fill me with pure joy whenever I think about it.

Probably also 96. Mario 64. Nuff said.

EDIT: Wait that was 97. :slol: I'm not good at nostalgia!

Any year between 1998 and about 2004 I think. Hard to narrow it down. 2000 springs to mind actually, as I am pretty sure I picked up Pokemon Gold, Perfect Dark and Majora’s Mask, while being a bit hyped up about the Gamecube’s imminent arrival a year or two later.

I want to say 1999 for the Dreamcast launch but I feel like 2000-2001 would be a better pick as my most played and most memorable DC games were in that period.

'98 is a close 2nd, mainly down to Ridge Racer Type 4 and Tekken 3.

Has to be that 98-00 period where we got the likes of Ocarina, Majora's Mask, Banjo Kazooie, Perfect Dark, DK64, 1080, F-Zero X, Smash Bros and others like Jet Force Gemini, Castlevania, Yoshi's Story, Fighters Destiny and Snowboard Kids. I got Diddy Kong Racing for Christmas '97 as well so I'm including that :datass:.

Good shout on the Sega stuff, alas I was only ten and wouldn't get a Megadrive for another three years

2002 was pretty sweet.

Mario Sunshine
Metroid Prime
Metroid Fusion
Morrowind
Age of Mythology
Timesplitters 2
Eternal Darkness
REmake
Final Fantasy X

Only one it's missing is Metal Gear Solid 2 which was November 2001.

Edit: actually, screw it, MGS2 released in PAL in 2002, it counts.

Probably 1999. I got my N64 for Christmas '98 and spent 1999 catching up on games that had come out earlier in the console's lifecycle. GoldenEye, Banjo-Kazooie, F-Zero X, F1 World Grand Prix, ISS 64, WWF Warzone/Attitude, topped off with Donkey Kong 64 for Christmas.

Check out my YouTube channel!
One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Maybe 2011, the start of my second year at uni. Being in a house for only the one year it's easier to place memories specifically within that (academic) year. I can vividly recall playing Aliens Infestation at the kitchen table, playing Skyrim on my PS3 in the living room (and another of my housemates playing it all the time when I wasn't), and playing Skyward Sword on the wii in my room.

I have lots of nostalgia for earlier gaming times but they are usually centered on Christmas when I got a new console, or playing individual games, not a year as a whole. So I think 2011-2012 wins it on that criteria!

Really tricky question this one! "Best year" is probably easier to think about because then you can just focus exclusively on the games, but trying to assess the year you have the most nostalgia for brings in so many other aspects - friends, family, where you were in your life at the time, getting online for the first time etc.

A huge year for me in terms of nostalgia was 1995 - as a family we traded in a bunch of stuff like our Amiga to get our first PC, playing things like Doom and Sim City 2000 for the first time was an incredible experience, plus it really built on the "modding/bedroom coding" side of things that had been around in the Spectrum days with things like making custom maps and sprites for things, and just generally revelling in the freedom to tinker with games in a way that was never possible on consoles :toot:

A strong contender would also be 1997 - somehow me managed to end up getting both an N64 and PS1 at the same time that Christmas and just had an incredible selection of games to play almost non-stop over the festive period: Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil Directors Cut, Mario 64 and Turok Dinosaur Hunter basically wrapped me up in their warm embrace for two solid weeks of gaming bliss!

Best year was 2017, no question. Far too recent to be nostalgic though.

Can really pick a year, but its a period in the early 90's (92-93 i would say), when i was playin loads of stuff with friends. Maybe its the fact that its so different to how I enjoy gaming nowadays (almost exclusively on my own) that I remember it so fondly.

Space Crusade on the Amiga
Hired Guns
SF2 on the SNES
Secret of Mana on the SNES

Absolutely amazing years
