Wow, great work. I'm getting eye-strain just thinking about the number of hours of close up paintwork needed to paint those armies in 2 months.

Regarding Age of Sigmar, although I'm not into the wargaming scene any more, I hear from others that some clubs are still playing older versions of Fantasy Battle and aren't really bothering with AoS.

That's not a cheap endeavour, and amazing paint jobs.

I've begun divesting myself from Games Workshop; I have a load of Horus Heresy stuff that, depending on what they do with this rumoured rerelease talk, may get sold as I can't keep up with their relentless FOMO treadmill. Instead I've been moving into other stuff like historical/modern models or building Gundam model kits as there are a couple of indie rulesets available. In the case of the former here is some late war German armour, at 1/72 scale, so smaller than 40k and can't do ww2 games without them unfortunately:

Ha, yeah was an expensive outly but it speaks volumes into how much I love the game. Now I'm caught up it's just the monthly releases which is 2/3 boxes at a time and that's it.

Love that German armour, great job!

Thanks, I think I've realised that I don't like painting things like cloaks, skin or other smooth curved surfaces, I just can't get my head around glazing etc, I would get about 3 layers on then immediately strawberry float it up and want to chuck the model in the bin.

I got in a real slump a few months ago, with my airbrush causing no end of trouble (that I solved by packing the whole thing up in a box and burying in a cupboard and am much happier for it) and getting stuck in a paint technique video rabbit hole of value sketches, glazing, tonality, contrast and loads of other stuff that I of course couldn't do, couldn't get my head around and just felt miserable about, so took it right back to basics; unsubbed from a load of YouTubers who are way too good for me and instead focused on efficiency and getting stuff done with the fewest possible steps that require being actually good at painting to achieve.

Yep, every model aircraft youtube video is finished to an insane level with all sorts of weathering and panel line washing, with expert usage of fine airbrush nozzles, etc.

Lot of frustrated modellers out there I'll bet.

So last few months I've painted two AoS armies, however the new edition of Age of Sigmar has made me fall out of love of the game. Played 3 tournaments and not enjoyed enjoyed a single one. Got one more next weekend and then that's me done from competitive play unfortunately.

Gone all in on Marvel Crisis Protocol though, absolutely LOVE the game and the models. Ended up buying every box thats been released so far. Painting them is a joy too as they're all different with different schemes so it doesn't become a slog painting 10,20,30 of the same model to fill out one unit.

Here's some recent pics of some of painting;

There's a large club where I live that continue to play older versions of WH etc. From what I gather the new stuff just hasn't grabbed veteran gamers.

I painted those smaller tanks by hand from start to finish, brushed on the dark yellow primer then painted the camo on with an old brush to make it look like it was hastily applied with using whatever implements and paint the crew had left or could find/improvise which, towards the end of the war, is exactly what they were doing.

A lot of weathering is quite easy to do; things like oil paint washes seem complex because it needs a bit of prep and is used a bit differently to acrylics, but they are also extremely simple.

Skip the first minute, but this vid goes over how to make stuff look really good with very little actual artistic ability with things like zenithal highlights, contrast paints and then oil washes with a small amount of highlighting as you go. I do the zenithal highlight by drybrushing white, which makes the difference between the light and dark areas more severe, but I find that helps them stand out from a distance more.

Tbh an artist who is unable to compromise or innovate with given restrictions is probably not a very good artist! Or at least not a professional.

turned very much into Hero-Hammer. Lots of ways to get +1 save now, I played an event where I was fighting Nagash who was on a 1+ save ignoring rend and re-rolling 1s. In those instances you just bounce off him in combat.

I'm doing an event up in Scotland next weekend after a 3-month break from the game, it might be the break has been good and I'll be back into it, or and I have a feeling this will be the case, I'll come out the weekend with my gripes confirmed and I'll be 100% playing Marvel going forwards.

I can thoroughly recommend OnePageRules, a one-man operation who has put out alternate rulesets for 40k and fantasy that are free, the army books are free and updated, use significantly streamlined rules and is based on alternate activation rather than sitting there watching your dudes get pummelled for ages before you're allowed to do anything, with the paid option for different rules variations you can chose to add in, and access to the same points calculators he used to make everything, so you can stat up literally any unit or entire new armies if you like. I cannot and will not keep up with GW's relentless pace of NEW NEW NEW BUY BUY BUY along with all the other scummy gooseberry fool they do, and after working out it would cost over £100 in books alone to get back into 40k (probably more now) I am saving my chaos army for this or going back and playing 3rd/2nd edition.

Fun fact, their recent bundles of admech/deathguard (not the annual battleforce boxes which get revealed tomorrow) cost exactly the same as the component units, so you save literally nothing by buying them, but they're available for one week only, order now so you don't miss out! etc.

Bought some non-GW miniatures as I wanted some that were more in line with D&D. These are by Wizkids, an American company. They're very nice models.

They're pretty good if you want a character or monster for wargaming too, I picked up some for a now abandoned fantasy orc army project and they were alright.

I'm particularly pleased with the dragon. It's not too big, (unlike GW's Lord of Change), and will make for a nice ornament piece.

Did some more Christmas shopping (definitely finished now) and once again treated myself. :fp:

Feel a diorama coming on plus the D&D campaign I'm running has zombies incoming so you know...

Some more work done, however now that I look at it I think I've inadvertently given my wizard a Christmassy vibe.
