They also don't explode when they fall over owing to the brittleness of cyanoacrylate. Two part epoxy is better but that's expensive, messy, and really toxic (not that a compound similar to cyanide is better).

But there were also more to file, cut and grind away, making that clean-up process more forgiving.

You can also strip them with whatever and they won't turn to goo.

I left a Citadel finecast tyranid in Detol for about 2 days, it hasn't disintegrated but it literally wobbles around now

I would regularly need to pin parts of metal models but I do in general prefer them for larger models. Resin is also fine but at least as much to clean up.

It really comes down to the quality of the mould, the casting materials (including metal) are of less consequence.

I shall report back once I've tried it out.

Boom... Trying to match that colour on the arm is hard :(

I didn't realise until this morning how mushy my yellow paint looks.
Must have been too tired last night to notice it. Must thin the yellows more in future.

Just noticed I've missed some pretty obvious spots.

strawberry floated up the skull on the belt and missed a patch on the backpack entirely.
I was staring at this thing for three hours last night! How did I miss these?! I blame staying up late.

Do you have a magnifier or do you do it just looking close up? A magnifier really helps spotting the details.

I need a magnifier regardless because me eyesight went to gooseberry fool a long, long time ago.

Yeah, just freestyle eyeball it at the moment.
I did joke to the wife about buying one of those granny puzzle lamps with the magnifying glass in

Eyesight definitely wasn't what it used to be. Painting the cables on the lightning claws nearly made me crosseyed

I mean, you can already see the jump from the first to the second model, so I don’t think you have a lot to worry about

Also, I always take a picture of my model when I think I’m finished because it always shows areas I’ve missed

I can guarantee every single time there is something there - part of my process is to finish, take a picture, put it down and walk away, and come back a few hours later and just pick it up and look over it and see how I feel

For example the tau man I did yesterday, last night before bed I had a look and decided I wanted to recess shade more and also add some touches to the weapon :)

You know... I'm sorely tempted to get back into this and start painting some miniatures again. I'd love a crack at one of those GW dreadnoughts.

Hmm.

I was never really into the actual game when I was younger, but I loved reading White Dwarf to see the paint jobs so I'm enjoying this thread right now.

Coincides with finally dipping into the 40K novels for the first time, which is cool. The universe is so strawberry floating grim. Love it.

I'm currently the third book in the Horus Heresy series and it's so grimdark :datass:

Also Gloomspite is lovely and gruesome.

I'm gonna build up to the Horus Heresy, but I already know a lot of the basics around what it was.

Plan is to work through this reading list:

Only just started so I'm on the 2nd of the books in the Uriel Ventris Chronicles, which is basically a Tyranid invasion of an Ultramarines allied world. Loving it so far.

Painted my retro space marine captain last night.
Inspired by Falseys gorgeous glow on his necron model from a few weeks back ( ) I followed a tutorial for Object Source Lighting to get the plasma coil "glowing" onto areas of the model.

Again (bit of a theme here), not perfect but we can build on that :D

Not too sold on Contrast paints yet. Used for the yellow armour and the cape here.
I think maybe I'm lapping it on too thick perhaps.

Looks pretty good on the armour but yeah it has pooled a bit on the recesses of the cape. The trick with models is to hold them at arm's length or put them on a table and look at them, if they look alright from that distance that's normally what matters the most for tabletop models. Its all about progress, so keep this guy and look at him again in 6 months or so and compare to what you're capable of then and you'll see the change.

Contrast paints have a lot of utility beyond what GW advertise them for, I paint pretty much exclusively using the grisaille technique, i.e. paint entirely in black and white first to get the light volumes done then use contrast paints as transparent colour layers over the top, a bit like this but nowhere near as good:

yessss you should all start painting

lew, i think your base/primer coat is a hold up there, it looks a little chalky perhaps? make sure you give the can a solid min of shaking and it also helps to dunk it in hot water for a few mins beforehand if its a lighter tone, helps it come out thinner

I think you're right there. It probably doesn't help I'm using cheap white/grey automotive primer that I get for free from work, probs not the best nozzles.

I'll try hot water next time and report back :)

It's just such a shame those new GW models are so damn expensive.

There are a whole host of cheaper/different manufacturers out there; companies like Victrix, Perry Miniatures and Gripping Beast do very good historical models, such as these vikings from victrix which are £42, which is a lot, however you get SIXTY of them for that price:

Image

Are they individually as detailed as GW? No, of course not, however they don't have to be. Not to mention if you get into smaller scales like 1/72 where you can get stuff insultingly cheap compared to GW, or even down to 15mm or 10mm where entire armies come in at around £30.

As for rules there are plenty of model-agnostic (as in you just buy the book and get models from wherever you want) systems for any sci-fi/fantasy or historical setting, period or topic you can think of.

Yeah I guess.

It's just I'm absolutely drooling over a particular GW dreadnought and it's 42 bloody quid!

They can be cheaper at other places.
Is this the one you're looking at?

The same website also does the £90 GW "Combat Patrol" boxed armies for £76.
