gw havent done complete sets for a while

they recently started doing army sets where they include every paint they use for their 'parade ready' schemes for the army but i dont think they have contrast, only classic paints

Cheers for the info. I don't suppose you can put a list of "go to" paints that I could buy?

I know Falsey is better equipped to answer with a better answer, but coming from a guy who's just dipped back in, the paint and tools set is good value.

Same price as ten individual pots of paints (£27.50) but you get 13 pots and you get a brush and some clippers and a mould line remover:

Decent all round set, but you'll need a proper greens and some flesh and bone tones. The green in the set is like a green glowing wash.
Oh and some browns. Mournfang is nice brown. Oh and maybe a grey.

Otherwise it's a good stepping stone to get into it.

It's fine and primed black and good to go.

But... There's something heavy inside it and rolling about when you tilt it.
I've messaged the guy to ask if he's hidden a priceless jewel inside it for a laugh, but he hasn't replied.

Do I crack that sonofabitch open to see?

It might be a counterweight to prevent it falling over.

Yeah, when I built my Tomcat model a while back I had to put a weight into the nose cone to keep it steady.

Possibly. Falsey mentioned earlier he puts 2p pieces in the bases of his to weigh them down.

But, it doesn't matter for the time being, as my two sons have broken the see-through flying base already :fp:

This set from Vallejo is probably the closest to an all-rounder starter set there is, you get a decent amount of basic colours in dropper bottles.

Tell you what actually, Mommy... I completely forgot about this.
Army Painters "Speed Paint" range is their version of Citadels contrast paints. And apparently they're very good, a LOT cheaper and come in dropper bottles with mixing balls in them as standard:

You get flipping loads of them too!
£67 for 24 paints from Amazon, but you can get a smaller speed paint set too.

they are pretty good for one coat stuff, but they are reactivated by layering which is a common painting style, from what ive seen

this can be avoided by varnishing over them, but obviously, time and effort is the concern there

i would probably just get a selection of standard acrylics for starting out

I bought a miniature to paint.
Pretty clear I'm going to need a station with a light and a magnifying glass.

Spent about four hours painting the land speeder last night (after my four year did the first layer of mephiston red :| ) quite happy with it so far, but need to finish it tonight.

Got to finish the cockpit, difficult with the pilots already glued in.
Gunners skin needs finishing.
And fine red highlights.... If I can keep my hand steady enough.

EDIT:
Quite happy with how this little green light came out. Managed the ol' shadow and highlights trick first try :datass:

Got my additional ghosties from False yesterday

Though why the Harridans have come with slotted bases when they lack slots just screams GW nonsense to me

Heh. I've never been able to keep a palette clean my whole life, probably won't start now! I'll use a wet palette for the base coats and use the plastic one for the detailed stuff.

Gonna take me a week or so to build the damn thing first, then work out the best way to actually hold it while painting. I'll probably have to attach one of the legs to something and paint the arms/guns separately before gluing. I have to hold a model with my elbows planted - the 9cm base is too big to hold comfortably, so that will go on last.
