It may have been that the sculpt was spectacular but whoever had to slice that up and make it into parts rushed it out as part of the usual churn of GW's profuse output. They probably do that in something like Autodesk Fusion or Inventor or some other CAD, which is a totally different craft, and not one you can kind of intuit as you go along.

Those apps can simulate parts fitting together etc but once it's actually moulded I wonder how much they test that and go back to the drawing board.

It's a problem with a lot of the alleged beginner friendly push fit models; the parts are so close that the friction just stops them going all the way together, I tend to just cut the posts off completely and glue them together as the parts fit well enough without them.

Or you test fit them and it's so tight they break when pulled apart again...

The other night I saw this on YouTube and showed it to Falsey because I loved how it looked.

So, in a similar vein (after watching some tutorials obvs) I've been painting this one this evening and really happy with how it's turned out.

Image

Highlighting on the gun could be better, and I need to do the crest thingamajig on his left forearm, but I'm done for the night.

Big fan of the drybrushed silver peaking through the paint of the armour, on the backpack etc.
And the drybrushed necron compound on the sword to give the effect of the black paint having scratched off over the years.

But yeah, pretty happy with how this one turned out. Think I've found my style in a way, and definitely set on Blood Angels now too :datass:

I like the grimy effect on those.

I tend to be obsessed with painting all my models really 'clean' for some reason.

Thanks guys
Been watching loads of Duncan Rhodes videos and started taking a more slow, careful approach when painting.

Yeah, I always used to, but then YouTube started suggesting "grimdark" painting videos and I'm hooked now :toot:

Gonna go in and start learning AoS soon as well. Something to focus on and gives me a reason to paint it all up.

good job, i find the big setups pretty intimidating to get going on so as long as its done its done

my local group has had recent rumblings of getting an aos gang going so ive just picked up some rule books etc as i hear its less dense than 40k to learn

Their centrepiece models recently have been outstanding.

I think they've gone too far with them a lot of the time, to the detriment of being able to actually take them anywhere to play on a table, things like the new Nagash, the bloodthirster among others need an entire carry case to themselves, and while the use of negative space etc is impressive, they are a lot of model held up on several fairly thin joints:

The cost is a constant issue too, spoilered for size and terrible paintjobs (not mine):

On the left and right are a Reaper Miniatures Fire Demon and Minotaur Demon Lord, each cost about £10, while in the middle is Skarbrand, who costs £90 but is almost exactly the same size.

Did the 2nd marine in the squad this afternoon. Experimented with mud pigments on the legs too. They aren't set though, so not permanent yet. And first model painted with my new Wet Pallete!

But bugger me can I get the colour/shade of red to match the previous model? :fp:

Image

Batch painting in future methinks

I'm really happy with the sword on this one though
Image

And tried something different to the first one for the armour scratches, fine (or attempted to be fine) brush stroke with runefang steel - don't like it, going back to dry brushed necron compound edges. So these rubbish looking scratches are getting painted over in red. Please ignore.

Don't like painting skin, just need more practice though I guess.
Much prefer painting helmets.

Nice. I like how you paint at a decent rate and they look good - you don't get bogged down. Which is what I tend to do.

Still constructing my dreadnought. Hopefully in a week's time I'll be able to get the four parts of the model prepared and sprayed, ready for painting.

Pace is definitely my problem too

Takes so long and then I get caught up in the critical mass of doubt and have to psych back into it again rather than just being free to pick up a brush and play

This but add about 5-10 years on average per mini.

My record is about 20 years.

I think the fastest I've ever painted something is at least a day and they're not very good.

Painted another blood angel last night. Really happy with how this one turned out. Added Typhus Corrosion on the bottom half of the chainsword to make it look nice and dirty.
And now, with added Blood angel decals!

One thing I was concerned about was cohesion in the paint scheme as I'm painting them one by one. But so far they look ok!

You are improving at such a rate I am weirdly cautious about pointing it out, perhaps in case it stops
