The app for dark descent is really good, it gives story throughout each campaign and really builds the atmosphere. It'll do something like you're clearing through some tight corridors and say "suddenly a crash is heard and 3 goblin archers appear" then get you to place the pieces and give a special condition for that turn. One session we'd helped a stranger on the map between main missions, and he turned up during a later quest to help out, it was great.

There's a Lord of the Rings one that came out recently that's like that, Journeys in Middle Earth I think.

Would Dark Descent be any good for 2 people new to this type of thing? (me and the GF)

Would like somthing that's not too complex to play

Absolutely, it's the situation we were both in. Without the companion app i don't think we could play it, at least not at first because it can be intimidating at first, but both playing co-op with the game being run by the app really helps. Plus there's the rule book you can refer to if you need it, or just blunder through a bit. We ran through the short tutorial quest first to get the hang of it, then have been going through one of the two free large quests that the app has included, and we're not finished yet.

The app handles bringing monsters in, the turns and the quest layout. You still use all your cards, figures, tokens and dice.

btw painting before gluing parts is fine if you use plastic cement because that will also melt the paint and it holds together fine in my experience. I just file away the paint somewhat where most of the contact is as well which also adds a key for a superglue to set in if you use that.

It's when you use superglue between layers of paint that's the problem, because then the paint just cracks and your stuff shatters into pieces the moment it hits the table at an offhand angle.

Alternatively, pin them, but that's loads of work with a drill.

I need a brighter secondary colour than grey to bring some contrast in, need to rework my scenic glue mix to be a little thinner, and need to figure out how to capillary on the weathering pigment better

not a bad trial for my first tau and Ill improve on the second for sure

That looks great. Especially like the weathering/rust and the foliage.

Looks ace. I like the weathering, and the detail on the shield (have you painted that, it looks painted). Yeah I'm sure with this very different style of model you'll grow in time; I've not tried a tau yet (I have one of those little pathfinder droids though because they're neat) or anything chunky-armoury since Space Marines when I was, like, literally 12. Fleshy nids are kinda easier for contrast because of their natural self-shadowing and crevices lends well to dry brushing and just painting, well, whatever gooseberry fool is nearest you where it goes up shades like that. Basically, geometry/relief maps sort of 1:1 with subsequent shades up the luminosity scale. Plate armour, especially flat/geometric, is way, way harder to make dynamic.

For your glue, do you mix the glue in with the flock and stuff or sprinkle it on? I'd suggest sprinkling or dipping it. Paint the PVA on like paint (I don't even thin it much, a milky but still somewhat viscus consistency), give it some random pattern, sprinkle, then layer like that. Just as suggestion, as not entirely sure I've understood your method. Once I literally just put loads of super glue (or even plastic cement lol) over a base and then put flock on, trouble is, it all soaks up and looks weird and translucency. I find it's better if the stuff just sits on top of a layer of glue that, once its dried, its fully obscured by the stuff and is basically invisible.

The solution is easy anyway. Just add more flock lol

That looks great False, I love the little rust details. I find when admiring other people's stuff that it's the little bits that make all the difference, just a subtle little mark here or there really sells it.

For the base stuff I did, and the moss on the statue it was just runny pva painted on, then I put the model in a takeaway tub and sprinkled the stuff on. Pinched the leftovers and kept sprinkling until there was no more white visible. Flock bits were can be with a blob of pva and pushed in place with a cocktail stick.

ty guys

for the foliage I tried a new technique Ive not done before that a lot of the diorama modellers use, pva down and sprinkle the flock on, then apply isopropyl and then a mix of pva/water/soap - it does really stick it down but as I didnt have my mix quite right it was too thick and flattened down the flock. lesson learned and next time Ill probably scatter and leave it there and check the durability

the little lines on the helmet and shield are decals, another first - I wanted to get over my fear of spoiling the model right at the final steps and Im glad I did as they arent that scary

Just about finished painting the first miniature this evening from this set
Image

Just got some mild dry brushing to do on a cloak to bring out the highlights as it's black. I went my own way and just made up a colourscheme as i was going along. Used some the army painter startr paints, and some GW ones from the set. It was looking ok, a bit disapointing really, nothing bad, just not quite what I'd hoped for.

Then I used the fleshshade.

Holy gooseberry fool I see why you guys refer to that stuff as liquid talent  The difference is quite ridiculous really.

I think I finally settled on X-Wing as a game to get into. Are there any other players out there? I was also looking at Aeronautics because it includes the board and 6 aircraft and it's only £15 more than X-Wing.

Finished. I'm pretty happy for my first try and making the colour scheme up as I go.

So hard to take a decent photo in this light.

I think I enjoy the basing as much as the painting.

That's pretty good, here's a guide on taking photos:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/2018/03/06/the-model-photo-how-to-photograph-models-for-display/

The only thing I would say is that it has a lot of warm tones - brown, red, gold, skin tone, something with a cooler tone like a blue weapon handle wrap would give it an eye catching accent.

I hadn't thought of that, I was so wrapped up in trying to make it represent this guy (but without the flames)

I'll try something like that, I've only got a limited set of colours at the moment, but I do have a blue I could try. Maybe just dry brush it on to the handle or something.

This probably belongs in here as it's a very niche annoying thing, but I despair at the number of people on places like Reddit asking if a particular colour would work for an effect, or saying they want to paint something a certain way and asking if it's a good idea. How does the approval of internet strangers matter for what they do with their own stuff?

Does this colour work? Try it and see what happens. What tipped me over to posting about this was someone saying they painted their first marines as Ultramarines and now wanting to strip them to do Salamanders and asking if it's a good idea. They're your bloody models, do what you like with them! Maybe I'm old, but are people incapable of taking decisions without approval from the internet anymore, especially when it comes to painting tiny models?

Standard people getting into an art/craft but struggling to learn that failure is good and not every decision can be logically deduced from an existing rule set.

thats a good paint ad

my only suggestion would be bringing the contrast in a little more, something Im guilty of forgetting often, it brings the drama of it up a lot

its tempting to go for a more realistic shading but it means you lack the pop on something so small

Cheers. I painted the little dwarf from descent last night and it's about half that size, was very tricky to paint, and as it's in the same colours it's suffering from the lack of contrast (I went a bit ott with the wash). Will try a fresh highlight of the various colours in the right places to brighten it back up again.
