the whole point is that its all bad though, right? there are no good guys

not that I have a problem with a deeper more nuanced approach to shades of grey - Id like to see smarter storytelling with a further understanding and appreciation of different peoples - but Ive never witnessed or heard any hint of right or fascist rhetoric at any event or place Ive ever been to

Maybe it's just an extremely online thing, but there are definitely segments of the far right nerd community who strawberry floating idolise the imperium as their future fascist wet dream.

Just yesterday I found a guy whose twitter profile was all about the good emperor, avatar and all, going full #AllLivesMatter and being a generally racist piece of gooseberry fool.

On the flip side though, I've gotten into watching a couple of mini paining streamers on Twitch (I think I finally get Twitch!) where they're just casually discussing very left leaning politics throughout as well.

The point SHOULD be that it's all bad but that's not really the message that gets across these days. There's very little nuance, a lot is SPACE MARINES SMASH GOOD FOR THE EMPEROR YEEHAWW.

maybe its because I got into the game when I was younger and remember all the gooseberry fool about how worshipping the emperor as a god is literally against the emperors wishes and its a broken and radicalised human populace who do so in the faint vein of retaining some sort of galactic power

I suppose because almost all of it is fascist and totalitarian in its direction it will attract those sorts of people

to my knowledge I dont think the alien races are portrayed this way other than maybe the racially pure and superior eldar?

I dunno, Im not a far right piece of gooseberry fool so I dont read it like that

all I can say is Ive never witnessed any of this but I come from a point of not being black or female

I was actually displeased about the largely white and male direction myself to the point where I opted for sisters as my primary force and I have been learning skin tones with the goal of having a fully multi racial force - I dont want white with white hair, I want black, white, asian, everything in between - but Ive never liked default schemes anyway

I dont doubt this happens and shouldnt happen - but I have to question how widespread it is

Good and bad is fairly baked in along 'racial' lines.

Some of the issue is that what might have begun as something where it was considered more parody in a Judge Dredd way in the 80s, when the people behind it, while far from perfect (women, lol?), at least were smart enough to know some things about history and politics, these days it's just written by people who have never consumed anything other than GW writing or gaming and have lost the idea of that behind it. They just see the factions as heightened versions of how they started without any subtext. The Space Marines are the noble good guys, etc etc.

I'm talking less about racism in the hobby although it definitely exists, more just about GW's position and output in the current environment and whether it's 'okay'.

i started following GW and Warhammer/40k in the late 90s - it has always been absolutely fascistic - especially overtly so in the 40k universe. however i do think Red's right that they have lost the nuance: recently Space Marines are presented more as heroes and shining beacons of light whereas when i started it seemed 50/50 whether a Space Marine would save a random human or crush them for being weaker and a Chaos-risk.

9th edition info from today's article:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/202 ... ge-post-1/

Command points per game size:
Image

Detachments cost Command Points, but if the Warlord is in a Patrol, Battalion or Brigade Detachment then that Detachment is essentially free:
Image

At the start of your Command Phase you get 1 additional Command Point in a Battle-forged army:

7 core Stratagems available to every army, including this Stratagem:

I can usually fit my Necrons into a single Battalion Detachment so I should be maxing out those Command Points quite easily.

Some 9th edition art:
https://www.warhammer-community.com/202 ... of-new40k/

The art and imagery of Warhammer 40,000 are key to the game’s appeal. The grim, dark universe of the 41st Millennium comes to life through the incredible artwork that peppers the pages of the game’s books – and the new Core Book is no exception. Today we’re taking a look at a few pieces of art from the book, starting with the glorious cover art.

There is little that exemplifies Warhammer 40,000 more than the eternal battle between the Imperium of Man and the forces of Chaos*, and this cover showcases that on a colossal scale. At its heart is a clash between Roboute Guilliman and Abaddon the Despoiler, but delve deeper and you can see the full scope of the war for the Imperium laid bare in images of massive armies and mighty battlefleets. The stark colour contrast makes the dichotomy between darkness and light even clearer.

Image

Of course, the Imperium isn’t all light and heroism – far from it, in fact.

Even this image of Imperial heroes marching to war emphasises, in colour, style and content, the drudgery and weight of the 41st Millennium. From the blood-tinged skies to the grotesquerie of the serfs in the foreground, there are plenty of insights into the broken-down and strife-riven state of the Imperium.

Image

Look at the way the sun glows through the Master of Mankind’s halo, bathing the lines of pilgrims in light. Well, sort of. Those marching devotees don’t seem to be basking in its glow. The statue of Him on Terra even looks a bit sinister when you give it a second glance…

Image

As well as art depicting scenes from across the Imperium, the new Core Book includes plenty of more abstract imagery as well.

This piece showcases a few of the many perils that await Humanity out in the cold darkness of space. From nameless alien horrors and robotic menaces to monstrous creatures that evoke the horrors of Chaos, there’s loads here to pore over – and more like it to enjoy (or have nightmares about) in the book.

Image

There’s also plenty of what’s known as “page furniture” throughout the Core Book. These are the small images that sit between paragraphs and contribute to the overall feel. In this case, it’s one of disturbing horror, and a galaxy where even the smallest things will at best scare you and at worst suck your soul out while you sleep, hollow out your corpse and use it as a flesh suit.

The Command Points changes are more about solving the 'soup list' issue where fielding stuff from multiple codexes and receiving more Command Points in 8th edition was generally more competitive than sticking to one codex with more limited numbers of Command Points and more limited unit choices. It's a boost to mono lists while soup lists now have to pay a Command Points price for the benefit of choosing units from across multiple codexes. A good change really, makes sense!

As well as a nice nodback to the opening text from the original 40k, that last line has a bit more bite than most corporate statements so far, which make a lot about unity and togetherness and improving, but fall short of saying "if you don't agree, then off you strawberry float."

And of course reddit/facebook etc is awash with greasy alt-right nerds whos fee-fees have been hurt for being called out. I would respond that they should go do WW2 games where they can play literal, actual nazis, but a lot of those games are actually good too.

This is possibly one reason I chose tyranids because I don't think they even have genders and are just random colours.

Will consider not white washing my marines/dark elves however when I get around to those. It's definitely a problem however I also read the lore in the 90s as marines being pretty amoral and a last gasp for a stupid dystopian religious zealot/fascist empire / homogenous blob. They're dumb genetic clones that get angry and shoot big shooty sticks at anything they're told to with about as much subtlety as a chess pieces loaded with dynamite. I went to a CoE school so maybe I was unconciously more familiar with the fascist/religious overtones but I certainly never considered it, as kids don't do that stuff (unless they're non-white maybe). I also played with British/American soldiers and nazis, but I preferred calling them "Germans" because I recognised that the military aren't necessarily in agreement with the state if they've been conscripted.

But I was like 7 so...

Facebook threw up my old Nurgle Stormtalon conversion from when I worked in the studio today, had forgotten I'd done this horrible itchy bastard for Warhammer Visions, back when that weird magazine was still going.

Image

I had called him Shitstorm with a back up name of Chunderbird One but the White Dwarf team vetoed it and renamed him :shifty:

I still remember that and it's very nice.

I have a plastic space marine dreadnought kit from eBay with similar soldering iron bullet holes, only it's awful and I remember the eBay listing saying "painted by ginger" everywhere and it's also written on the base like, anybody knows who that is or something. It's one of those 100% chaos black with a bit of blue, metal drybrushing and weathering done to it. Honestly it's crap  but there's so little done to it I knew I could strip it and basically have a new kit. Can work with the "bullet holes".
