They're also pretty much entirely melee based and not all that big on the magic side of things, so not really in my personal preference of play style.

I'm popping into Middlesbrough tomorrow so shall pop into the Games Workshop branch and perhaps check out Dark Elves, High Elves and the two Chaos armies to begin with. The staff in store know I'm looking so have offered to let me play around with the store armies to help make my decision.
Sure, it means they're gonna get a sale out of it at the end, but I have to say that Games Workshop staff have the best customer service I've ever experienced.

I'm also in Holland the weekend after this, and there's a branch in the town I'm staying in, Bredda, and I believe there's one in Amsterdam aswell so I shall pop in there too.

magic you say?

night gobo's my friend.

my old night gobo's army was shooty and magic.

if i remember rightly it consisted of...

5 sheman's, 1 being the leader.

6 bolt throwers

2 fanatic launchers

2 units of gobo archers

3 units of 40 night gobo spears, each maxed out with fanatics.

good times.

Tyranids.

Because if you're fighting wood elves and medieval knights, then badass aliens from the future would probably have the advantage.

To be honest, I never played the game. I just liked to paint and make the models.

I love how confused this thread is, dude asks for advice on fantasy armies and 40k rapidly becomes the dominant topic.

I don't play Fantasy myself as I like the looser style of 40k too but I would steer clear of horde armies these days, GW has been tweaking their rules a lot lately to make the game more and more expensive to play. :(

That said, if you're not going to playing in a GW shop or any official tournaments then you can use whatever the hell models you want and as GW gradually turn more and more greedy there are an increasing number of companies making alternative models for a lot less.

These guys would be a good start: http://www.manticgames.com/

Re: Gretchin, they never went away. :D You can have anything up to a squad of 30 in an Ork army now, complete with one runt herder handler ork per ten and a squig hound which amusingly will gobble up a few if the rest try to leg it.

You can get these 'just for fun' models too which I really like the look of.

After popping into the GW branch today and having a look at some of the newest stuff that's come out, I think I'm gonna go with Dark Elves for the time being. Perhaps later I'll pick up some Chaos units too, but I think I'm gonna make my main fantasy army some Dark Elves, led by a guy riding on a dragon :D

You should get a sub to White Dwarf, loads of cool stuff going on in there.

I had to stop a few years back as the models just got so expensive.

GW have some bizzare ideas about how to run a business, they're latest is that no new releases will be so much as teased until just one week before release.

They also recently switched to a resin plastic that's cheaper than metal to make minis with, and put the prices up at the same time (the "annual price increase") :fp:
A lot of the Finecast minis have defects too, it's ridiculous. They seem to enjoy burning bridges with their hardcore fans, and instead rely more heavily on making a quick bit of cash from younger gamers who have nothing more than a fleeting interest in the hobby. It'll eventually lead to big problems for them in the future I reckon.
I love a lot of GW's stuff and have done for almost 2 decades, but they've encouraged me to seek out and buy a lot more minis from other manufacturers these past couple of years due to their irritating business decisions.

Forge World works with resin, GW began switching to Finecast (a resin plastic) for their metals a couple of months ago:

You might have heard it referred to as Flopcast or Finecost.

They dont look bad tbh. The metal models I got were always lower quality than the plastic ones. Plus the plastic ones are easier to paint and modify.

One of the reasons why they used metal for some minis is because the metal casting process allows for finer detail than plastic, though plastic has come a long way over the years. The Finecast resin plastic allows for even finer detail than metal did, and indeed the quality of the sculpting isn't the issue, it's GW's quality control - many of the Finecast minis suffer from air bubbles that destroy detail on the surface, or air bubbles within the mini that make it more easily broken or even cause the mini to bend and collapse on itself in hot temperatures or direct sunlight, and there has been a shocking amount of miscast parts where the resin plastic hasn't properly filled the entire mould during casting.
Wayland Games, a large independent miniatures retailer, decided to return their entire Finecast shipment back to GW due to random checks revealing an over 50% miscast rate:

I've got one actually, hehe.

As for the metal vs Finecast debate, well I do have two metal models, a Terminator Librarian and Kayvaan Shrike, and I found them incredibly difficult to assemble. Getting them to stay together whilst the glue set was a complete nightmare due to the weight of the metal. Personally I'm glad that they've been switched over towards a resin plastic, though the quality control issues do somewhat concern me :?

gone are the days of 100% metal valhallan and sisters armies then?

i loved my valhallas and sisters, would be nice to get them in plastic, but now they cost more than the metal models, oh dear.

the expense and the fact the group i hung out with moved on to other things is why i stopped collecting, using 40k rules and 1/72 WW2 armies is alot cheaper, i mean 50 odd soldiers in a box for a flim is too good.

One of the other reasons was that it's a lot cheaper to make the moulds for metal miniatures than plastic (I think the moulds for metal are silicone, whereas the one's for plastic figures are big metal things). Mostly metal would be used for one off characters, or niche armies like Sisters of Battle. They seem to be changing their tune now, trying to make large amounts of stuff in plastic. The new Grey Knights are a perfect example of this, as it's now possible to have an entirely plastic army, whereas before it was mostly metal. They also seem more detailed than the old metal ones.

I think special characters will now continue to be made in resin. Not sure about more generic characters though. There's that plastic Space Marine captain, and the Chaos Lord. They've also just released a few fantasy wizards in plastic, so we might start seeing a few more miniatures like that. I'm hoping for a highly customisable plastic Necron Lord.

With regards to the original post, Empire might be pretty good. You get to use the Steam Tank.
