Nice stuff. The "concrete" bases would significantly speed up my genestealer cult army that's going with that smashed up "camo in the city" concrete/rock/moss sort of look (think The Last of Us), and I like the mushrooms as well for my 'nids which are forest based. Possibly a few alternative weaponised arms for genestealers as there's nothing fun about painting those (I have about 32).

I spent about 6 hours just finishing the highlights on a homogaunt the other day and then sculpting a base, which honestly isn't really necessary with the nice resin bases up for sale these days. I do use about 5 different kids of flock/foliage though.

The problem with resin bases is that over time they really up the cost of an army. I bought some but then also got some models off ebay who are plastic cemented to their based so are never coming off, so am going to have to rethink that. I've got a few texture rollers from green stuff world:
http://www.greenstuffworld.com/en/159-25-28-mm-0-0n30 which will make basing a lot of my guys easier.

I wasn't sure about how to do my GSC, i had the wild idea to paint them up like how you could have them in the first edition of 40k; a genestealer cult that fell to chaos but i already have a chaos force on the go, so instead i'm going with a full on mad max fury road-style Rusted Claw cult with lots of weathering and rust.

I have some of those original models but mine are more based around the idea of an in inner-city rebel force that grew out of abandoned facilities and sewers etc, so a sort of militant steampunk vibe. They are light blue highlights and dark green mostly. I'll post some pics.

Yeah, those bases could get expensive.. but I don't mind filling the gaps with my own sculpts. It's more the sheer amount of time I spend sculpting bases compared to the model itself, which hampers getting any actual playable units finished.

Nice work with the spray technique. I may have just added a handful more panel lines.

I have like 6 big'uns to make that my brother left behind before moving to Japan (where he can get whatever he wants of course). Inlcuding a massive Perfect Grade (or maybe perfect grade) Freedom Gundam.

I want to get some sprays or an airbrush (for some reason I have a compressor by itself) because brush strokes would just show up so much or I might fair better using a decent primer and some oils as they self-level better. Thing is decent spray paints are so strawberry floating expensive especially if you need several colours; you're paying more than the model is worth. Airbrush is much better as you can use only what you need and get a lot out of a pot using thinners. The downside is you have to clean it thoroughly every time you use it, but you can get so much detail and control over the spray.

Thanks for the feedback. I just got a few Gundam pens, so I will be adding more panel lines at some point. Need to add more decals too. I had trouble with the water decals, so need to try again with those. The 'rub' decals worked much better.

When it comes to Gundams I think anything smaller than 50 feet can be safely classed as miniature.

There are some fluids you can get that act as a very mild glue for the water-slides, as well as a retardant so they don't dry too quickly, but I forget what the product is.

Actually I think it's one where you apply them with water (LOTS of water) and then once they're tacked you paint over them with this fluid that basically melts them down slightly and they conform much better. Might be worth investigating that. It's probably a Humbrol or Tamiya product.

As I live in Notts, I think I'm going to drop by Warhammer World today to get one of the basic painting kits. That's all I need right for the first strike set? No other paints, brushes, enormous models....

they dont have them all on the website for some reason but they do a few paint sets like this

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/sm ... v-rom-2018

https://www.games-workshop.com/en-GB/DG ... V-ROM-2019

they'd be pretty perfect to start with depending on your units

the citadel paint system is a base > shade > layer > highlight (brighter layer) and those boxes contain the basics as well as a brief step by step paint guide to achieve the look

warhammer tv on youtube is really really good too

edit - this one seems like its designed for first strike

Yep, that's the one I got. The only thing I could probably do with is a fine details brush but I'll see how I get on.

I got a GW artificer brush as well as the one in the starter set and you can probably survive without it - its very soft bristled so its hard to use for dots and things like that

my epic gamer hack is I just used a cocktail stick and dipped the very end in whatever colour I wanted and then dotted it in - for example the red eyes on the orks

The dredd is looking great, excellent highlighting on the barrel, shame it'll be hidden in its bum.

Hah, goes to show what an adult giving a gooseberry fool does. I was the same but I started when I was 8 I think. God they were bad.

Really nice work with the metallics especially given you've just gotten back into the hobby and I don't mean to couch that. Orks are a good choice if you like dry brushing and blending metals. Skin and wood etc are harder to pick out details with because they are less round and regular in nature, you kind of have to make more decisions to highlight stuff you if know what I mean?

That's why orks and space marines are a good starter army. There's a lot flat angles, plates and general large surface area. I find the details for orks really get into the faces and trinkets, belts and weapons and stuff. Same with marines. But the chunky oversized armour of the ork boys are fun to highlight. It's like with the chunkiness they're sculpting more with less.

Something like most Warhammer fantasy armies, tyrannids, chaos, nurgle, dragons etc are a bit of a step up because there's so much gooseberry fool going on they seem to take an age. But a really good ork army with customisations and painted markings are really impressive. That whole big organised chaos look.

The new buggies really appeal to me. I've painted a couple of Warhammer fantasy goblins as singles just because their faces are great and... I like green.

My bro liked orks, there's something special about having the option to add stuff and their overall chaotic nature lends a more pragmatic nature to their painting, you can improvise more. I try to capture that with nids too, like visible brush strokes so they look more fleshy. Think spawn comics etc.

Marines got too boring for me after a while although I did really like the new plastic kits that were much more posable circa 1999. You could stick on grenades, the waist was ball based, shoulders were socketed. So not just the same thing 12 times like the earlier sets. Even the lead miniatures in blister picks were better than those because the sculpted poses were way more dynamic. I still have a bunch with the pointed noses, they look proper cool.
