If you're anything like me and have a seemingly endless circle of arts oriented hobbies you either need a house, a shed, a basement of preferably all of those things. But the trick really is to actually very carefully manage stock of less and better gear and don't just keep buying gooseberry fool you already have. I have model kits from decades back, I don't need another plane or car or whatever, there's always one to build whenever I want (but not like, ten). If you blend paints and use washes you can get more done with less. I recycle all kinds of crap for sculpting and base making too.

It's pretty inconvenient but really I've tried doing minimal and digital stuff and I either get bored or and get stuck at the starting point because there's nothing to go on. Creativity doesn't exist in a vacuum. It's just not fun, some of it is about the stuff and physically handling and playing with it to make new things.

At least that's what I'll keep telling myself. I always have an unseen bank balance if I clear it all out though. All in cupboards and crates etc. I can't imagine what life is like for people with no hobbies or just tv, newspaper etc I'd go totally nuts. I've always had art materials and projects etc going. Maybe it just how I was brought up. Pretty much anything I get my hands on I've built on or made or customised etc.

Miniatures are pretty slim and the expense makes it not really possible to hoard them unless you're a thankless rich kid. Can all fit in one chest.

If anyone needs to remove paint from plastic as well as metal models, i was recommended Bartoline Clean Spirit and i can confirm its good. Its cheap, biodegradable, non-toxic and doesn't stink like dettol.

The entire half litre or so of dettol I used previously in a tub has almost totally evaporated, so thanks for that. I have a few more to strip and that's it for me. Can't really be arsed buying nerfed up models on eBay, got plenty. And that turned out waaaay more expensive than I was planning (dropped about £70 on £3-£5 minis etc).

Oh and this is probably a Known Thing but NEVER strip resin models, unless you want them to look like a toasted cheese sandwich with permanent gout.

I have only stripped one model so far, mainly because I have THE FEAR regarding stripping any of the newer ones - I have no idea what they are made of really and so scared that edges and stuff will just meld into one

Nice job, i'm going to be ordering a big new desk soon so will have the space for everything.

The bartoline is great but i need a better brush for scrubbing the paint off, especially for some older models that are painted with god knows what.

Personally I've never got on with painting up from white base. I always go black or I've got a new Vallejo PU light grey primer which I've used on rocks and washed those down instead. I just can't get the same degree of contrast a

I've tried it in the past and I just always feel it's too flat and it takes a lot longer the break through what I call the 2/3rds points where it starts to feel like it's getting somewhere;- you have to break through that point.

Interesting because similarly I prefer to paint up from a "ground" in fine art or paint in negative, basically I don't like starting with white paper with wet media. It's not really realistic - in reality we are seeing an absence of light if it's dark etc.. So start with nothing and add light. Just always made more sense to me than the other way around. Find it way easier to add successive layers of shade and highlights than the "shade down" from lighter colours.

If i need to do white this is how i will do it, especially on dark/black armour; it doesn't have to be 'proper' white, just light enough that your eye/brain tells you it is compared to the rest of the armour from a few feet away, unless you look very closely.

Nice, they know how to package stuff. I need to try harder on that front... But it's really hard to be eco friendly as well and damn packaging is expensive. Best way to do it is with simple stickers and inserts like that.

I'm thinking of selling some of my non-starter 40k projects to fund getting into historical wargames - I still want to do 40k but perhaps have a bit less on the go at once, especially as I could get a box of 40+ 28mm 17th century infantry for the price of 10 Imperial guard. My genestealer cult never got started and got sidelined once I started my Renegades and Heretics to support the Chaos Knights and Chaos Space Marines so they can go.

I'm drawn to both Pike and Shotte (28mm English Civil War/Thirty Years War, made by the people who make Bolt Action) and Seven Days to the River Rhine (15mm Cold War gone hot, tank battles)
