Agreed that a "best" mini may not be the best way to judge, given there's a big range of skill and experience levels involved, as well as the time availability, but it sounds like a fun idea.

Meanwhile, highlighting is strawberry floating hard. :x

dry brushing can be very risky if not done in the right places, I feel like regular highlighting is better to learn first off

dry brushing can leave a chalky kind of texture

That's right. It's a high-risk strategy. But you can also dry brush with a very small brush in a very small area, then clean up with washes. I have one reserved for that.

Maybe I do too much "high risk" stuff and then "par back" more than I realise. I have a staccato painting style, or I'm under-appreciating my own confidence. It's something I started doing pretty early on so maybe embracing a higher % of chaos gave me more confidence or it could look terrible and make you feel awful.

Just 100% don't worry about making mistakes, you can only get better.

I've always been pretty sketchy with my balance of super agile methods of making stuff and more deliberately risky ones. It's about a striking a balance.

Oddly, I apply washes with a pretty high degree of accuracy, I don't cover whole sections or basecoats. I use them in very specific areas, often painting over lines multiple times with a wash.

I quite consciously decided I wanted to try edge highlighting rather than drybrushing. I definitely tried drybrushing before years ago, and I know it's an option, but wanted to try something different, and I really like the look of some of the edge highlighting I've seen on power armour on minis online. My brush control really needs some work, though. More than a few slips and fat lines where there shouldn't be.

Someone posted a good little tutorial on painting textured leather over on Imgur: here.

Leftover sprues are great edge highlight practice, lots of long straight lines and they don't matter so are less "risky".

practicing blends on the skin and stuff still

I wanted to achieve the effect of tight skin and spikes and scales bursting through it, and it looks hideous so I think thats a win

now onto other materials and then final touchups

pictures are a bit over exposed as they are under painting light, the scales arent so monotone in reality

edit: one under natural light

I think the painting light shows off how painterly and personal your style actually is, you can take that as pretty high praise from someone with a formal art education ;) (I wink because it doesn't really mean gooseberry fool tbh, they don't really teach drawing or painting properly anymore, you learn more at a good college than what the art schools / polytechnics have become as modern universities).

You're really doing the painting thing and not the like, photorealistic rendering thing, which I legit think is better. To make an extreme comparison, no matter how smooth airbrush work might look for example, it's flat and boring to look at with no texture. In less words, it lacks "visual interest". Really keen to see how it looks when it's finished!

I'd have been tempted by that core skill set to try and actually get some painting skills, but it's out of stock :(

Back in stock now, by the looks of it.

Painting in these temperatures is making my paint dry even chalkier than my amateurish paintjobs normally are, even though I'm thinning it with water.

False, the metal on that guy looks fantastic! The texture you've added to it (presumably with tiny thin brush strokes?) Really adds a realism to it!

That's really good.

Also the photos aren't underexposed - a photo is as exposed as it needs to be the capture the subject you want. Not like certain % of white spots and dark spots etc. It's fine. I know, I did actual learning for this stuff. I underexpose stuff pretty often and then correct levels in software so that I don't blow out all the gooseberry fool I actually want to be visible in the photo.
