Chaos Space Marines? Pffft. My brother has yet to beat my Space Marines with his Chaos Guys. Then again he has also yet to beat me with his Grey Knights either (Ok, the only match we've used for those is a Quarantine game and I only managed to win by having a single Rhino at the end of the game, but a win is a win!), or beat me at all now I think about it......yeah....Abbadon aint so tough in my brothers hands it turns out. A few canon-shells to the face from a Vindicator and he's crying like a baby.

I had considered Skaven but I just look at them and always feel just a little creeped out....hehe.

I was originally leaning towards Dark Elves before I looked too in depth at everything, what do people think of them?

And I was kind of put off Orks due to just how easily they die in 40k. I know they make up for it in numbers but you score one good explosion hit or a multi-firing weapon like a Gatling Psilencer and you can cut their squads to shreds in no time flat. Are they any better in Fantasy?

I think I'll take another look at Empire and High Elves, though I was kind of leaning towards being on the side of evil with Fantasy

Dark Elves are fantastic, mate. I had myself an army of them (I could probably sort you out with a bunch of stuff once I get home :shifty: ) and they were a lot of fun. Really nice balance of cheap warrior units, with some elite units, and then you got your powerful sorceresses and stuff too. Pretty badass artwork if you get the codex too. I don't remember much in terms of rules as it was a good maybe 7 years ago or so, so they've no doubt changed too.

From my limited experience of Warhammer Fantasy waaaay back in the day, High Elves were the kings of magic, but if you wanted to go evil then a hordes/beasts of chaos army would go down well, sorcerers and demons backed up by dudes in spiky plate armour. Can't go wrong.

Or to throw a curve-ball, what about Lizardmen? They hit pretty hard and have some decent casters as i recall.....

Despite still playing even after 17 years I still know 40k really isn't cool.

Because orc armies tend to use large number of crappy units. Quantity over quality.

The side effect of this is though, that you have to paint all the little bastards.

One tactic I rarely see used - and thus it may no longer be applicable - is overwhelming Gretchin. Pointwise, they used to be cheap as strawberry float, and their guns were fairly gooseberry fool, but you could have up to 40 of the little bastards in a squad. This made them relatively hard to rout, and 40-shot volleys a turn? The guns might have been gooseberry fool, but someone or something is probably going down. They also operate as effective flak screens, allowing your more powerful units to move up relatively unopposed.

if you can use the Gretchin to get the orcs into melee range, the pendulum usually swings dramatically in the orks favour, Add a couple of random units, like bikes and cannons to diffuse space marine fire a little more, and the space marine commander has a seriously target rich enivironment and can't realistically afford to ignore any of the threats.

They got rid of Gretchin I believe.

I used that tactic once against a squad of Terminators. 40 shots... I killed one.

Meanwhile my bike squad and wagon o'orks flanked the tanks and lay explosive charges on them. 8-)

I used to collect the Imperial Guard. Primarily collected Catachan jungle fighters and had an army kitted out for jungle warfare. It looked bad ass, had a few Ogryns, a good few sentinels (just like the AT STs in Star Wars), a basilisk, a couple of chimera tanks. Loads of troops, obvs and quite a handful of the metal sergant/leader types.

It was a decent little army.

I sometimes wish I still collected Warhammer, as geeky as that sounds, but the price is just ridiculous. I had a browse recently and the amount of money it costs is unbelievable. I can't see how anyone can even afford it.

In fairness, killing a terminator is an achivement in itself. They died only on a 1, right? I'm prepared to bet that the point tradeoff was pretty even, too.

I went with Tyranids for 40k and Dark Elves for Warhammer, namely because they had awesome, customisable models, and badass elites like Hive Tyrant, Red Terror etc.. and I had a witch king on dragon-back for Dark Elves, and some Cold Ones (kinda dinosaur mounts).

I also had some Space Marines and Eldar when I was younger, before they re-introduced Tyranids and I chose some Warnhammer.

green skins, of all kinds.

most advanced race in 40k according to the Eldar.

and the fantasy world is somewhere in the 40k universe so dem greenskins are covered too.

Epic/gothic/fantasy/40k/bloodbowl/man o war/gorkamorka... go greenskin for them all.

waaaagh!

Like I say, my only sticking point with recommending Orks is the sheer amount of painting required.

The painting is the part of the game I don't like. I don't really have the patience for it, so it's another strike against the Orks really. They're also pretty much entirely melee based and not all that big on the magic side of things, so not really in my personal preference of play style.

I'm popping into Middlesbrough tomorrow so shall pop into the Games Workshop branch and perhaps check out Dark Elves, High Elves and the two Chaos armies to begin with. The staff in store know I'm looking so have offered to let me play around with the store armies to help make my decision.
Sure, it means they're gonna get a sale out of it at the end, but I have to say that Games Workshop staff have the best customer service I've ever experienced.

I'm also in Holland the weekend after this, and there's a branch in the town I'm staying in, Bredda, and I believe there's one in Amsterdam aswell so I shall pop in there too.

Really? The Ork psykers used to be bad ass.

The thing that makes the Orks of interest to me is the inherent randomness of the side. A megaweapon is nearly as likely to blow up your own troops as enemy ones, but when they do what they're supposed to, they're devastating.
