Pretty clear I'm going to need a station with a light and a magnifying glass.

Realised I've not seen an update on this. How's it going? :datass:

By the way here's a pic of my Dreadnought parts. I've made a start on the Massive Gun (I can't remember the proper name for it):

Excuse the flash, the light is gooseberry fool today:

And this boy is going to be escorted by these two little fellas which I did a while back. I think I rushed the guns a bit and not totally happy with them:

I haven't touched it. I need to buy the station and magnifying glass. I went to Games Workshop in Shrewsbury at the weekend and seeing some of the stuff there made me wanna give up before I've started

It's a matter of perspective, distance and intent. If you're painting individual models to get those Instagram likes or display shelves where they sit on their own and are the sole focus, then you need to git gud. If you just want an army of dudes on the table that look ok from about 3ft away in blocks of 10 or more among scenery, on a battle mat etc then you really don't have to do that much to achieve that; and playing more and more games makes that increasingly apparent. Nobody cares about the backs of a models boots, for examples so do you need to get perfect blending, 20+ layer glazes there? Of course not.

Wise words. My sole purpose of painting is to find something to help me chill, but as Falsey said a while back, he still has his first model as a point of reference. I used to paint lead soldiers when I was a kid and loved it. It's all for me. I do wish they were a bit bigger though. My eyes are failing me a touch.
As for gaming, I wouldn't know where to start. Is there a decent page for dummies explaining gaming?

It's okay, my eyes are truly terrible and I manage. With my reading glasses* and a magnifier lamp it makes everything perfectly clear.

The biggest problem for me is keeping a steady hand for the really intricate bits. I sit with my elbows planted on the desk and I keep my hands and model cupped together while painting. Plus that keeps my back pretty straight so I'm not haunched over all the time.

*By the way, many people put off getting reading glasses (on top of their regular glasses) but they don't realise just how transformative they are for close up stuff. I wish I'd got them 10 years earlier.

As a disclaimer; there are many many more games out there that aren't Warhammer at a variety of force sizes, model sizes and costs (for the latter a lot of which are a lot lower).

If you wanted a specific model available as an STL that's a good size for you I could print one mate. There's tonnes of stuff online.

I have a 2K SLA resin printer. It's not doing much.

I'm glad I went for the Vallejo Black Game Wash - it's just as good as Nuln Oil and costs half the price.

Me and my kids play the OnePageRules grimdark future 40k equivalent.

It's completely free, has downloadable army lists with clever upgrade paths.
The rules are very easy to pick up and games are relatively short, an hour or so. It's been great for my nine years old to learn

Highly recommend watching a "how to play OnePageRules grimdark future" video on YouTube.

They do, however I think a lot of them don't need to be, and are to justify the price, as well as the instagram mentality of posting pictures of single miniatures in isolation. For example their new zombies:

Image are £35 rrp for 20, whereas mantic zombies are less visually striking but you get twice as much for a bit less at rrp, so this isn't taking indie discounts etc. For a literal mass meat shield the gw ones have way too much going on for what are cannon fodder.

This is partly why I kept to painting older gw models mostly, things like the new chaos marines are like having to paint a squad of 10 characters in terms of detail, the vast majority of which isn't visible or noticeable in a squad, on the table with a game mat, scenery etc.

I've been trying to snipe built, but unpainted models from eBay recently in order to save a few extra quid - even on indie prices.

Here's a couple of recent purchases that should arrive soon:

£8.75 Sigmar (sealed, new) paint set:

£27 repulsor:

£17 Killa Kans:

Bit of a gamble though, as I won't really know how well they've been made until they arrive, and whether it's been worth the saving :dread: :datass:

I always consider those ones when I see them. But I also like the putting together aspect of it so I kinda question why I'd buy them built.

Though now with things being more distinctly posed it's maybe less effort.

That being said got the wife the Stormcast Dominion set off eBay. Plus she got me Awlrach and a Krulghast for birthday. Awlrach is currently in about 8 pieces for painting due to the model having so much cool detail.

i bought a light of eltharion prebuilt and badly contrast painted for like £15-20 off rrp and sorted it out with an afternoon of sanding and filling and now its ready for paint again, lots of savings to be made if you arent too bothered about building them

i was also put off by the prospect of getting bad mould lines etc, but i have the tools to fix that, so why not save the dosh i guess

still prefer to get nib but cost is king i suppose

I've been selling some older minis and a few abandoned projects on eBay lately to help fund new purchases, currently focusing on building a Kruleboyz army for AoS and Ordo Xenos stuff for use across various 40K games.

I've been selling tonnes of stuff, mostly GW purely because they sell the best and for the most, in order to fund other things like my early war German/french as well as dark ages/crusades armies for games like Chain of Command and Saga. Although with the way things are going in terms of costs for everything I'm drawing a line under things because I think future sales will have to go into savings.

I've had numerous white metal and lead miniatures from eBay in Dettol for about 5 years

If you've any older Chaos Space Marine stuff I'll be interested to appease my son's desire for constant new models

Last one for a while, I've got to seriously rein this in.
Going to have a pile of shame at this rate.
