I've never actually been into the whole table top role playing stuff, but by strawberry float some of those models are brilliant. I have some respect for the people who have painted these tiny models really well. Example

It's the sort of stuff I would have in a display case.

That what I was getting at. I just can't believe they can actually get away with charging that kind of money. And the prices they charge for paints, glue, etc, etc is even more insane.

I feel a bit upset now. I'd love to sit down with some Warhammer and just paint them but you'd have to be that fat couple from the Euro millions to just afford one man.

Anyone who buys GW paints deserves to know about Vallejo's range, almost identical colours with very similar names for much less in bigger bottles and they use eyedropper bottles so your paints won't dry out from leaving the lids open all the time as you have to with GW's ones. Really, they are fantastic, when I feel like hobbying they're the ones I buy every time.

Happened to me about a year ago ago thanks to a thread on here. From there it was just a quick dip into GW's site to see if there were any new Ork models, amd oh, would you look at that, there's loads, and they all look fantastic...

Currently all my stuff is shelved/boxed up due to a double whammy of being out of work and disillusioned with GW.

This thread is already having that same effect on me again. :fp:

Just saw these this morning as well. :fp: :fp:

That's the thing. I really don't.

I wouldn't mind the odd game or two, but all the associated costs... urgh.

Find a friendly local, unofficial club. I was attending one in Gravesend for the best part of a year and they're fantastic, you could play any game you want, with any models you want, didn't even have to be painted. No snobs at all, lovely club.

go WW2 40k, its cheaper, the rules are online.

£20 and wanting to do a british force, easily could get a churchhill, 2 boxes of 50 infantry, which come with machine guns and mortars, and basically enough for 2 plattoons and an HQ and maybe a bren gun carrier or 2 with 4 pounder guns.

thats why we went with 1/72, i have a german panzer grenadier force and have the basics of a decent sized jap force, even found a jap tank which wasn't easy, both armies are around 1000 to 1500 pts and it plays almost the same as 40k, tweeked slightly for units, certain weapons etc.

I gotta say, I know pretty much nothing about Warhammer.

I think that makes me really cool.

Almost by coincidence I've got back into 40K recently - in the last 2 weeks I've bought the rule book, Tau Codex, Starter paint/equipment set some more paints, a black and white spray paint and a Tau Piranha! Seeing as how I live about 10 minutes away from Warhammer World it seems like a good idea to get back into it as I should be able to get involved with some pick up games quite quickly.

Finding the idea of painting my Piranha a bit daunting now. What are the best war gaming websites around and does anybody have any good introducing guides to modelling and painting (like where to buy cheap equivalents of GW paints as previously mentioned)?

Reading this thread is giving me the urge to get back into it. I move house in 6 weeks and will have more space for hobbies. I just wish there was a club in my town, the nearest is in Edinburgh, and it's a bit of a trek.

Nice work Yoshimi!

Up for turning this into a general wargaming thread Lagamorph? I'd always wondered if there were many wargamers here :shifty:

Decent paint work there Yoshimi.

If there was a GW near me Id probably be well strawberry floated, but they're all quite a trek. Apart from a few general hobby shops, but they tend to put a stupid markup on them all and dont really have the knowledge that GW staff do.

We have this wonderful indie store in Sheffield called the Wargames Emporium. They sell everything, from Warmachine and FoW to WW2 and Historical stuff. Best part is they sell a ton of 2nd hand GW models and do trade-ins like GAME!
I got an unpainted, assembled 1500pts Tau army for £60.

I got back into warhammer about 3-4 months ago. Currently got high elf and chaos warrior armies. While I like putting the models together and playing the games with them, I don't like painting them (probebly doesn't help that I'm really bad at it)

There's a GW shop five minutes from me in a massive shopping centre but I don't give a toss, I never go in there except on the rare occasion when they release a new model I'm interested in and then only to look!

If you want to buy GW stuff, online is the only real option these days, these are my favourites, there are more out there.
http://www.waylandgames.co.uk/
http://www.darksphere.co.uk/
http://www.maelstromgames.co.uk/
http://www.giftsforgeeks.org.uk/

If you're on a budget though and don't mind a little bit more work ebay is a goldmine for cheap GW goods, their core demographic is young kids who buy a shitload of stuff and then move on, their parents then throw all that stuff on ebay. Often it will be in a right state but you can pick up some great bargains and it's easy to break apart or just paint over a bad model.
Case in point I wanted some Meganobz to make my orks even more hard hitting, GW were charging £10 or something per figure at the time, I got four on ebay unassembled for about £9, a couple of arms were missing but it was an easy task to give em new ones. :D

As for paints and hobby supplies Vallejo are my favourites as I already mentioned but Maelstrom have a very large range of alternative paints/tools/supplies etc. Though with tools you can just go to any old model shop and get the basics for much less then GW. One more useful piece of knowledge for those starting out is that you don't need to buy model specific primer(s) for putting a base coat on your models, you can use bog standard car primer from Halfrords.

I've never been interested in actually playing Warhammer, it looks incredibly boring and that's coming from someone who played D&D as a teen.

Painting and building models/terrain though? Loved it, until the prices started to get a tad stupid.

I'm getting the urge to dig my old stuff out again.
