(In b4 Ad7 giving a facepalm emoji to the term "staycation")

Hello!

So whose holiday plans have been scuppered? I'm down a honeymoon and a trip to the states at the moment and am going stir crazy.

Me and my partner really need a break so gonna do the government's bidding and stay within the UK.

Can you help recommend any places that:

- Are accessible by train, easily from London
- Has nice nature/walking potential
- Doable without a car - e.g. Town/Food shops walkable nearby

Also let me know your staycation plans plz

Pretty much anywhere in the south of Britain is easily accessible from London by train. In the last couple of years we've been to Devon, Cornwall and the Isle of Wight which should all be easily doable. You could go up to the Cotswolds if you're not bothered about being coastal. I've been on a couple of canal boat holidays recently, not sure what's going on with them at the moment though.

Dawlish.

Can be accessed quickly from London Paddington (though you'll need to change at Exeter on to a local service), the station is right on the seafront, the scenery is gorgeous, there's some great fish and chip outlets (along with gift shops selling boxes of fudge), the place is very compact (no car needed). and there's loads of top quality scenic walks.

See here...

I mean hell, if i had the chance right now, i'd go down there myself.

Keswick and its immediate surroundings is good even without a car, if you fancy a forty minute bus from Penrith after a three hour train from London.

I've been to Plymouth recently which seemed nice. Cornwall and Devon are nice. I would also recommend Bournemouth.

Can't help you with near London I'm afraid, all my favourite STAYCATION LOCATIONS are in Scotland or the north of England. But if you did want to go further afield, the Loch Lomond or East Fife(St. Andrews) areas are fairly easily accessible by public transport, have all the amenities you're looking for and are bloody lovely.

Plymouth is underrated, the shopping area is pretty decent, the hoe is nice and scenic (hello no context thread), the barbican area is really neat, and is home to a massive aquarium attraction.

The gin distillery tour is also good fun in Plymouth

Do one of the overnight trains like the night riviera to Penzance or the Caledonian sleeper to Inverness

What you'd actually do once in one of these places - strawberry float knows

I can't remember how long it took but last year I went up to Newcastle, there is (not sure if it's currently running), a bus which takes you out to Hadrian's Wall (take the 20 minute train to Hexham and pick it up from there) and also there's Beamish (mostly outside living village) which I could get to by bus.

Not sue if the stuff is open mind! but I had a nice time. (Indigo Hotel next to the station was decent and wasn't too expensive).

The Sleeper is actually a very good call. There's strawberry float all to do in Inverness but it looks nice! Only thing is, a lot of the tourist areas around there probably require a car.

Actually, Edinburgh might be a good shout. You can do Arthur's Seat/various other nature trails around the place and the whole of the centre looks bloody lovely. PLUS! There are hardly any tourists there just now thanks to Coronavirus so it's a good time to see the place.

Only ever had a brief wander around Edinburgh and that was years ago, would love the chance to visit properly at some point.

Aye I've never seen Edinburgh so empty, plus super easy to get to from London.

The bus is the AD 122 and it's running although on a slightly reduced timetable. Most of the forts are open with pre-booking, the scenery is stunning, Hexham and Corbridge are cute places to stay, decent pubs.

Four hours on a train isn’t it? And a nice journey as well, goes right next to the sea as you get to the border and Berwick.

Other thing about Edinburgh is that you have easy access to the rest of Central Scotland(Glasgow, Stirling) and the East(Fife, Queensferry, other nice places) through the train network, which is close to running as normal again.

I’m loathe to do it because it’s in my nature to hate the London of the North, but I would strongly recommend Edinburgh for a trip away at the moment.

Oh, the Isle of Wight is pretty easy to get to and around by public transport, a train ticket to the island should cover the ferry fee.
