Fish brains are not like mammal brains so we empathise less with them.

If it looks like a beaver fish and sounds like a beaver fish, then it's probably a beaver fish

Not for me to judge but make sure you get a bit of variety, for your health!

Thanks for the concern I do eat less Beans on Toast and more other stuff than I made out

Seems like bullshit to me, but who am I to judge I guess.

At the end of a day it's still a living creature that would rather be alive and doing its own thing than being farmed, suffocated, gutted and eaten by someone so it feels like a bit of an arbitrary distinction to draw to me.

A similar argument is made by meat heathens who say that mass farmed animals wouldn't exist at all if they weren't going to be eaten.

Like that makes it okay.

Just gonna hop on here and point out that this is my new favourite sentence.

I was right, https://blogs.scientificamerican.com/thoughtful-animal/once-upon-a-time-the-catholic-church-decided-that-beavers-were-fish/

Ah, the Catholic church, logical to a fault.

I mean my personal argument is that fish in general seem pretty stupid and I doubt there's much sentient experience going on in there, so whatever. That's a different argument though.

The empathy argument is not an objective, rational one but it makes sense that it happens and that people feel more of a connection to mammals in general. The distinction isn't so much arbitrary as it is natural.

I guess, but it does still feel fairly arbitrary to draw the line there for me personally. Although I appreciate that a line does need to be drawn at some point otherwise your available food sources are really going to close down - plants are alive, they want to grown and spread and if they could express themselves more readily would probably not be all that keen on us eating them either!

It's probably hard to determine the IQ of the non-human population of the planet but there are plenty of stupid mammals out there as well - probably comparable in intelligence to fish and I doubt any vegitarians would be up for eating those base on the intelligence angle!

Because if I eat a single (non-breakfast) meal without meat I don't feel like I've eaten at all.

Also because so much meat is so incredibly tasty.

Also because I love all the other things as well, like cheese.

This thread has made me very hungry.

Whilst I haven't tried recent stuff like the Impossible Burger, previous meat substitutes I've tried have had awful taste and texture.
Plus meat replacements seem to be mostly focused on Beef at the moment (Though from what I understand that's because Cow farming is by far the most damaging form of animal farming), whilst I very much enjoy the taste of both Chicken and Pork, so even if Beef could be reliably replaced with "Impossible Meat" it still wouldn't be enough to drive me into at least being Vegetarian.

In terms of full on Vegan, I love drinking Milk, and things like Soy/Almond Milk just don't have the taste I enjoy. And Vegan cheese is universally utter shite. Even when it's melted it somehow manages to have a powdery taste/texture.

I went full vegan for one week about 2 months ago to see how I got on, just as a test. I actually did pretty well, there are enough substitutes that taste almost the same as chicken for example. I really missed beef though, and bacon.

If they could come up with a decent fake bacon and a beef substitute and get the prices down to the equivalent of meat, I'd have absolutely no qualms about being a full time vegan.

Impossible burgers and beyond burgers are both really good which I'm happy about, make it easier to cut down on beef.
