I also thought it was the case that the Eagles didn't really care what happened to anyone else, so wouldn't have actually done that if asked. Also the power that the Witch King of Angmar had (which is referred to several times in the book iirc) was such that the Eagles would probably not have been able to get through even if they tried.

The Eagles are Manwe's creatures/servants, right? Obviously, since Sauron isn't an idiot (as we get repeatedly told by Gandalf and others), he would rightly fear them, so it wouldn't work.

And it would have been gooseberry fool, honestly.

Why Exactly Didn't The Eagles Drop The Ring Into Mt Doom?

I think this is the most salient point:

Tolkien even went so far as call [the eagles] a "dangerous machine" to the story and tried to limit their use because he saw how obvious it should have been to use them. The Eagles were supremely powerful as he first conceived them. Thorondor actually scarred Morgoth's face in the First Age. That's Morgoth, a being infinitely more powerful than Saruon himself. They were Valar. Eagles saved, at one point or another, just about every legendary character of the First Age. Tolkien had to back off on that because they represented a deus ex machina to his later ideas.

Says it all.

Sauron was Morgoth's lieutenant. A servant to an even darker lord. Not sure about the infinitely more powerful bit though. Morgoth corrupted Sauron but he passed on a lot of his lore and power to him. More powerful certainly but not infinitely so.

Sauron is a lot more cunning than Morgoth, too. Ooh the gooseberry fool he pulled before the hobbits done im. Sneaky strawberry float!

I actually think a corrupted eagle zooming about pooing on people might make a better book.

Okay.

Actually, this is ridiculous. I'm not getting drawn into this argument. LOTR has a silly plothole which everyone is perfectly happy to gloss over. Live with it.

AND simultaneously drop a tiny metal object into a seething caldera of lava?

Bear in mind, they only get one shot. and Sauron has an air force too.

Dude was totally hedging against this plan, I'm telling you.

Dammit, now I can't help but imagine the end of Return of the King as thought it was the end of Star Wars. Frodo flying on his Eagle buddy, while being chased by a ringwraith, as they attempt to fire The One Ring into a small thermal exhaust port right below the main port.

This. Never understood why people had a problem with it.

So let's send a couple of midgets instead.

Okay.

Why not just get your big fat army there to distract Sauron and then fly it in?

Because of the Nazgul, and they did use an army to distract him.
