I'd completely forgotten about the Everybody Votes! channel! Very strange. Don't forget the Mii Contest Channel either! Bizarre.

Yeah, the Wii Channels were rather odd but pretty cool. I liked how the data on the Everybody Votes! channel could be viewed for different countries. It was pretty educational... Nintendo players in the Netherlands peferred burgers whilst those in Belgium favoured Pizza!

If someone is a shooter fan, surely they should enjoy Splatoon. Relevant to the Wii era, FPS fans should probably find some enjoyment in Metroid Prime (although I'll accept that they verge on exploration more than shooting). There are Nintendo games at the top end of plenty of genres. 2D and 3D platformers are obvious, with Mario being what everyone thinks of. Racing - Mario Kart. TRPG - Fire Emblem. More classical RPG fans can find some of the best in the genre from this gen and last gen only on Nintendo consoles, despite not being Nintendo games - Xenoblade/X, The Last Story and TWEWY for example. Fighting fans should probably enjoy Super Smash Brothers.

I think that you have to be quite specific in your gaming tastes to avoid some crossover with Nintendo exclusives, and yet a disproportionate number of people appear to be disinterested in Nintendo consoles considering that.

I don't think it is as simple as all that. Taking your examples, you may like action adventure games, but do you want to play one in the Zelda world? Do you want to play an FPS in the not so serious Splatoon style, or do you want the more serious COD approach? The answer for some is "yes", but the answer for most is "no".

Yes?

Central to a game is its gameplay. A themeing/style/world that I am interested in may elevate a game with mediocre gameplay into one that I really enjoy, but I've never had the opposite where a game with excellent gameplay is brought down by a setting I am uninterested in. The core gameplay is still the main appeal (and I would have thought it would be for most people), and the core gameplay in Zelda and Splatoon is great. The styling and setting of COD does absolutely nothing for me and leaves me entirely disinterested, but I still enjoy playing it with my friends because underneath the appearance is a solid FPS. (Having said that, I have never bought a COD game, but that's more because of my disinterest in the overall genre/gameplay style rather than the themeing. Give me a classic arcade FPS any day.)

The style and appearance of a game would have to go a very long way to put me off a great game, I think.

Theres a part of me that will always regard the Wii as an opportunity lost. It had some great games but how many of those games were defined by motion controls? DKC was great but the motion control didn't add anything to that game and unfortunately its a criticism that can be aimed at too many of the platforms best titles. We saw glimpses of what motion control could bring to gaming with Wii Sports but mostly we got much the same game but with mainly button driven gameplay.

That's why I'm so harsh towards the Wii U as it repeats the same mistake of offering an innovative way to play games but doesn't make the most of it.

The Wii Shop Channel is to be closed. Funds cannot be added after March 2018 and games cannot be downloaded after January 2019.

Man, I really like the Wii Shop. That background music is legendary! Of course, the best version of the Virtual Console exists via the Shop, too... so many formats and games! The pricing is pretty high and sales virtually nonexistent, though  .

Of course, this raises the spectre of digital games disappearing from access for people who have bought them. You will still be able to undertake a Wii system transfer but re-downloading won’t be possible. When you consider the money that some folk have splashed out, this seems a bit, uhm... anti-consumer “odd”, really.

My Wii is still connected up to my living room TV  .

Buying digital, especially from Nintendo, continues to be a bad idea

...he says owning several digital switch games. But there aren't always physical versions :(

The nice thing about Nintendo systems in that regard is that they often get hacked wide open by the end of their lifespan, which makes Nintendo's bizarre online policies irrelevant.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

It’s time nintendo allowed you to redownload already purchased games onto your new systems.

My ex had one, wasn't a fan at the time.

Graphics were basically the same as the Gamecube and many of the games, especially those involving Miis, had an horrendous art style.

The motion controls never clicked, they felt unresponsive and never really replicated your movement (thankfully we got PlayStation Move a few years later).

Only games I bought were the Mario Galaxy games, enjoyed the varied levels and little puzzles, but never loved it the same way I did Mario 64.

It was the best GameCube ever made.

"It should be common sense to just accept the message Nintendo are sending out through their actions."
