Nice (Old) article about why working on accurate emulators is so important. Well worth a read (I think it's the guy who wrote Higan/BSNES).

Tomba 1's such a gem, grabbed it off PSN some years back. Delightfully odd mix of a quirky 2D platformer mixed with an Elder Scrolls quest system

I'm thinking of putting together a second retropie system for my nephew's birthday, but he's only 9 and the backend of retropie itself is too complicated for him, and it's too much faff for me to do a second time.

Is there a more casual user-friendly alternative? I've heard of Batocera and some others, but I have no experience with them.

Pretty sure Retropie has a "Kids" or "Kiosk" mode that essentially hides the backend options away so they can't be accidentally accessed.

Fake EDIT: Yup.

Actual EDIT: So you would set it up for him and off he goes. Perhaps combine it with one of the pre-made SD card images that are..... out-there. :shifty:

Oh yeah, I know about that. But I occasionally have trouble setting up controllers with mine, with certain systems not acknowledging controllers that aren't first in the Pi's device list.
It's a small niggle that's easily fixed in the backend, but I just want to make sure that he can plug in whatever controller and be away, without me being called for tech support.

As for the premade images, is there a particular folder I should look in... out there? :shifty:

Ah fair enough.

Not yet. I've only recently started looking at them myself.

What the best N64 emulator package for a Windows based desktop these days?

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

Also, I had a very quick 10-turn board on Mario Party 7 via Wii emulation earlier just to make sure it runs okay for an upcoming game day. Worked perfectly.

Lastly, I grabbed Path of Radiance from the Drive repository to see if it's something I really want to drop £100 on for a physical copy.

N64 emulation is still very hit or miss in terms of it being accurate. Theres a lot of stuff that will run games just fine, but you'll encounter bugs.

That said PJ64 or Mupen64 are the best stand-alone emulators for it I believe. Retroarch has MP64 cores within it as well if you want to use that, but I don't know how up to date they are compared to the standalone versions.

An N64 mini will be the first console where people can't scream "But jut get a Raspberry Pi!!!!111", because the emulation of N64 isn't amazing even on powerful hardware.

Wouldn't you rather have a good open emulator instead? Odd point of view there.

23 years later we still haven't got one.

I'm not saying we should have one or the other. I'm saying that if/when Nintendo release an N64 Mini there won't/can't be cries of "Raspberry Pi can do the same thing cheaper"

Anyone tried the resi 4 for GC that’s in the folder? I’m running it on nintendont and it’s cutting the bottom of the screen off. As if the boundaries aren’t set correctly. Not doing it with any other games. I’m wondering if it’s an issue with that particular iso or something with my widescreen settings.

Edit: figured it out - having the force progressive scan option on is doing it for some reason.

Fired up my old Wii U for the first time in about a two years...

Can I make it into a "Homebrew" machine?
What systems can/will it emulate if the answer to the above, is yes.

:)

Yes, you can. By hacking the 'virtual Wii' inside the Wii U you can access through its Wii menu, you can install the homebrew/emulators the Wii had for which there is a lot. That includes the inbuilt emulators the Wii has for virtual console releases, so all those systems they use for virtual console. I hear that PS1 emulation on the Wii U isn't too bad either.

With homebrew you can also get it to run Gamecube games natively.

Here's the guide for vWii hacking.

Having given up with the console as the disc drives are gooseberry fool I've been playing around with the OG Xbox emulator CXBHXR this morning. It's a bit hit and miss and there are few roms available or complete, but I have got DOA Ultimate up and running on it.

I played about with that a few months ago and it's definitely getting better. Xbox emulation finally seems to be getting somewhere.

I'll be honest I'm not that technically minded, but surely as the OG Xbox uses custom x86 hardware it would be an easier system to emulate than other platforms? What's taken it so long to get this far?
