Finally got round to backing up my 3DS carts thanks to a friend's homebrewed 3DS, so I've been trying Citra:

Unfortunately I didn't have much luck with performance, even OOT which is meant to be one of the smoothest games had pretty rough fps drops. Weirdly, it routinely plummeted every time I looked at the sun in Hyrule Field!

Can't wait for more optimisation to be done in any case, maybe it's the emulator not liking my build or settings needing to be tweaked on my end. As usual though, it's amazing how low fidelity games hold up so elegantly at higher resolutions!

If you haven't done so already it might be worth trying the games on Citra Canray, which is the more experimental version of the emulator that's more frequently updated. In the graphics options you can switch between CPU or GPU emulation for shaders, and that's what's made many games playable for me and a lot of people. Really drastic performance hike depending on your system.

No matter what though, OoT's sound always seems to be a bit off for me, even on lower resolutions. The frame rate is rock solid at even high resolutions. Perfect in every other way. Dunno what's up with that since I think it's okay with some people. But it's not a big issue and I haven't been on Citra in a while so maybe it'd be better now.

Thanks for the heads up! Yeah seems to be a bit better though still stutters here and there, NSMB2 for the most part ran wonderfully though seemed to stutter when encountering something for the first time (ie enemy or level end animation). Wonder if that's a shader generation thing ala early days of Dolphin.

Spent the weekend turning an old Dell Optiplex 740 into an Ubuntu based Retro PC and I've got to say I'm pretty pleased with the results. It was surprisingly simple too.

It's not a powerful machine by any standards (It struggles a little with N64 emulation through Retroarch) but it handles everything else I've thrown at it extremely well. SNES, NES, MegaDrive, MegaCD, 32X and PlayStation all run perfectly. I think I might even be able to tweak the N64 performance to get Goldeneye, F-Zero and some other games running 100% as right now it suffers from horrible slowdown in a lot of places. I've not tried Dreamcast or PSP games yet, but I do expect them to be just as bad.

It's running on the same software as my Raspberry Pi (The Retropie version of EmulationStation) so there's a lot of transferable knowledge there too. Right now the plan is to take it up to my parents caravan and leave it there (I've got my Raspberry Pi for my own needs) for whoever wants to use it, though I need to streamline the system and make it foolproof. Before I do that though I'm trying to find a way to use it for DVD playback without the need to exit to the desktop and use VLC, but I'll figure that out over the week I think.

It's all a dry run for when I eventually get a new PC and can use my old one as a Retro powerhouse for everything up to GC/Wii emulation.

Retropie is essentially just a customised build of EmulationStation (Very gross over-simplification), which you can get on Windows. However it's no longer being developed unlike the Retropie version which has been improving it with it's various iterations.

There's quite a few different frontends that you can use for these and it's worth looking into.

If you have a PC to spare I would very much recommend doing what I have and installing Ubuntu and Retropie over it.

EDIT: I should add that it was fairly simple to do as well.

www.retropie.org.uk has a lot of good documentation (Whilst primarily for Raspberry Pi, most of it applies to Ubuntu as well) and anything else you need can generally be solved by googling.

That's my one issue just now. Looking to see how well I can push it on the PC I'm using.

Certainly when it comes time to turn my current main PC into an emulation box I'll be taking that into account, especially as I want to run PS2, GC and Wii games on it (Might need a processor upgrade for Wii stuff though).

My experience with all the frontends I've played around with is that 90% of your time is spent "tinkering" to get it just right. The journey never ends. :lol:

That's great, thanks both.

I do have a spare laptop running windows 7, so have tried to find a decent front end but have struggled so far. I Downloaded about 100GB of Hyperspin stuff but could just never get it working properley. There looks to be quite a few "Complete Retropie collections" you can aquire, which may be easier for me, but never thought of installing a new OS and running Retropie.

might give the Ubuntu route a go tomorrow and the if that fails go give Launchbox a go.

Nah you're alright Mr Bot. I'll stick with Drastic which is easily the best DS emulator I've found, on any platform.

Gutted that two of my favourite nostalgic systems (N64 and Dreamcast) have stagnated emulation wise in recent years :(

Never would've predicted that while Saturn emu improved significantly. Should check that out sometime actually...

What is it with playstation emulators having terrible/not very catchy names?

Anyway I tried out RPCS3 for the first time the other day to see how Persona 5 would run. I recalled seeing some people being able to run it pretty much perfectly, with some getting even 40-60fps which is better than any version of the game on consoles. And at 4K. So overall better than the PS4 version.

With some tinkering I got it running at close to 30fps with some dips, partly because of shader compiling (tried to look up a cache I could download but it seems like it's not a thing for this emu yet like with Cemu) but in the long run that won't be too big of an issue. Then I got to the first instance of being in a town with people and...massive frame drops to around 5-12fps. Made me nostalgic for Breath of the Wild. At that point I was thinking I maybe just had to wait for the emulator to be developed a bit more.

But today I looked into it again and copied some configuration settings someone else was using, made some little changes and now in those areas I'm getting 18-30fps, and even when it dips a bit it's not too noticeable and fairly pleasant to play. The audio barely stutters. Running at 720p which seems to be the standard setting for the emulator (and I'm on a small-ish monitor at the moment so I'm not too bothered), but apparently upping the res a bit doesn't really impact the performance.

Any of you guys messed about with the run ahead input latency settings just released in retroarch? It's a game changer for emulation, kills input latency. There's a bit of tweaking involved and you have to do it per game, basically you pause the emulator, hit jump/shoot/whatever, progress frame by frame and count how much of a frame lag there is, then set retro arch to run at fast forward for that amount of frames for that game. Takes a bit of horsepower as my understanding is per frame you run ahead for you are running an additional emulator process so it's really for 2D stuff now. This video explains better.



Biggest poo poo people used to give to emulation was input lag, granted it's a bit of a faff to do but once you learn the process it's 30 seconds per game. Retroarch rules.

Interesting. Five minutes of research indicates that (maybe) it kind of rolls back the emulation (via savestates?) by however many frames you tell it to and then inputs the button press from there, then advances it again the same number of frames in the background back to when you were. Probably a bit more to it, but I think that's the gist of it.
The video is wrong about one thing though: when you're counting the frames of latency you're supposed to subtract one from the count. In both of his examples he should have set it to one instead of two. He's missing the ducking frame from from the jump animation in his first example, and in the Sonic example when he jumps while the camera is scrolling the scrolling actually stops for one frame.

Oh yeah that makes sense. I did wonder but thought the guy in the vid knows best.

I imagine the biggest gains would be through capture gear or shitty monitors.
