Took about 10 minutes of finding the right Google search result and worked out I'd placed a file in the wrong place on the Micro SD card even though it still wouldn't power on without the Micro SD inserted.
Ah that sucks man. Were you able to unbrick it at all?

If I were to get a Pi 3/3+, would just a case be enough or are a fan and heatsinks essential? Already got a spare micro SD, and think I'll need a decent power supply.
Seems like you can get decent performance up to N64/PS1, which seems crazy given the size of the machine.
The Pi is a superb bit of kit. Everything up to and including PS1 should run perfectly fine. N64 is where it starts to struggle but some stuff is playable. Dreamcast and PSP have some games that will run ok as well.
Heatsinks aren't essential, but they can help if you intend playing a lot of 3D stuff (PS1 for example). I would recommend getting the Kintaro Super Kuma 9000 case. It comes with a heatsink, looks like a US SNES and has functioning Power and Reset switches.

I've got a couple of SD cards, one with my Retropie build on it and another that runs Amibian, which essentially makes it into an Amiga.
You'll never be finished though.
