Wasn't sure if it was worth making a new thread for this but will start here first.

The market in the last couple of years has exploded with these cheap Chinese handheld emulation devices. The current ones are the BittBoy, BittBoy Pocket Go, LDK Game, LDK Horizontal, RG300 and soon the RG350. Never mind the likes of the RS-97 and the GPD XD Plus from last year.

Anyone have any experience of any of these? Love the idea of getting one to be able to take my ROM collection on the go. I know I can do it on my phone but I like to have dedicated devices for things.

Just wondering what are the best PC emulators for SNES and GBA? I have a few games I want to make videos about but I don't have a capture card for my originals.

Retroarch has decent cores for both of them. For most people's purposes they're pretty much interchangable. I use the BSNES core (I think) because it's a bit more accurate and supports MSU1 enhancements.

GBA I don't really play too much, but I think VBA (Again part of retroarch) works pretty well.

Retroarch is pretty simple once you know how it works.

Just noticed this.

I've got a couple of emulator handhelds myself. My GPD XD+, which is little bit of a beast and can handle quite a lot of stuff. It's great for PS1 games as it's got dual analogues, a nice big screen and it can crank the resolution up. It can also deal with N64 quite well, which is always the test of these thing. It's also an android device so it can run a lot of stuff for that as well.

I also picked up a BittBoy Pocket Go a few months back. It's pretty dinky and reminds me of the GB Micro, or an older mobile phone. Got it for the launch price of £40, but I think it's up to £50 now. Well worth it. It doesn't run everything. SNES is very hit or miss and PS1 is pretty much unusable, but everything else runs really well. Even GBA is nice. You'll never mistake it for a top of the line bit of kit, but as a tiny, portable way to play thousands of games at a very reasonable price it's worth a look.

I saw the RG350 on a video the other day and it looked pretty nice.

I've been wanting to pick up a GPi as well, but not sure I can justify the cost for something I won't really play that's not much more powerful than the Pocket Go.

I use SNES9X and Visual Boy Advance (VBA) respectively. For years I used ZSNES which is good but a bit outdated.

I’m pretty sure you can record gameplay with SNES9X but not sure about VBA.

BSes and Higan are the most accurate SNES emulators by far.

Sameboy is the best for GB/C

mGBA for GBA games.

Well, it was that when I last looked a few months ago.

Meant to post this yesterday, but Switch emulation is progressing quite nicely.

I'm getting closer and closer to Odyssey being playable on my system. It's really stuttery just now but with each update my framerate creeps up and up. I'm hoping for it to be at full speed for me by Christmas.

EDIT: I should say that I do get brief spurts of speed that get it up to 90% of the normal frame rate, but I'm hovering around the 65-75% speed area most of the time.

I'm probably not likely to try anything like Switch emulation any time soon as my PC just isn't up to that, but I'm curious - how are people getting ROMs for Switch stuff? Dumping their own carts or is this stuff already being distributed online?

Impressive to see that the emulation is already at such an impressive point - I was watching the upres video of Pokemon Let's Go the other day and it looks amazing.

Hacked switches can dump carts and eshop stuff, beyond that you can find the games "out there".

Some stuff runs really well for me, some stuff still needs work.

Puyo Puyo Tetris runs amazingly.

Seriously, how do I get my Gameboy games to look like Gameboy games on Sameboy? They are white. Or have the horrible colour that is added with the GBC.

I'm not familiar with that emulator, but I use BGB which is also a very good Gameboy emulator. So you could try that instead maybe.

It does, as well as a fair few other colour schemes.

The GDP has always been on my radar but at that price I'm not sure if I can justify it for what I'll end up playing on it. I've just pulled out my old Huawei P10. Never got round to selling it after I upgraded.

I have a mobile phone attachment for my 8bitdo SNES Pro controller so I've reset it up as a pure emulation machine with a file manager linked to my cloud storage and RetroArch.

Bare in mind it's got a pretty respectable processor in the Kirin 960, an octacore processor running at 2.4ghz and 1.8ghz and 4gb DDR4 ram. I would expect this thing to have pretty good performance on most things really!

When it's all put together it isn't quite as sleek at the GDP clamshell design it will still do a job!

How have you found the pocket go? I've heard they suffer with pretty bad screen tearing? The RG350 looks great and has rave reviews so far! But BittBoy are due to release the new pocket go to rival the RG350 so will be interesting to keep an eye on things!

The PocketGo does have some screen tearing issues, and resolution scaling can be a bit odd for some systems. But for the price, the build quality and performance are decent enough.

I'm not sure I would go for another dedicated retro handheld for a while now. Got enough that works. Plus as mobiles become more and more powerful it's always going to be possible to use an old phone as a portable emulation solution, especially the ones you can hook up to a TV.

Yea exactly its hard to justify me spending on a device when I have a much more capable and adaptable device right here.

I think I just have a collecting problem! I see something that is vaguely connected to my interests and I justify ways I need it in my games room!

I'm currently mentally re-arranging my furniture to see if I can fit in an Arcade 1up machine.

(I can do it, but I'd probably have to get rid of my CRT and stand)
