Engadget wrote:Is this the day, is this the hack that frees the Wii console to finally run your legal (or, eh hem, otherwise obtained) "backup" games? As the story goes, Waninkoko, the latest name to emerge from the hacking underground, has developed a "work in progress" v0.1 Wii backup ISO loader for the Wii Homebrew Channel that will run backed-up game ISOs converted with a "special program" -- no modchip required. If true then the whole thing smacks of the original Xbox font exploit that turned that console into a hackers playground and noisy, all-media playing powerhouse. In support of the claim, TehSkeen has posted a video demonstrating the loading and execution of a backup Zelda game. If Waninkoko can deliver this to the masses, then the demand for a proper Wii storage solution is about to grow exponentially.

If this is released, very bad for Nintendo since the Homebrew Channel is so easy to get up and running, no mod chips required, it's all software based. I'd rather they didn't release this as it would force Nintendo into taking action and trying to release an update to knockout the Homebrew Channel which has some great applications such as ScummVM.

Indeed. I don't need the ability to run pirate games, but I doubt Nintendo will make the distinction between the Homebrew channel and the applications a user can run on it.

It was always coming and it's an exploit that is almost impossible for Nintendo to fix. I've also noticed that it's not incredibly easy to cheat in online Wii games if you have the homebrew channel and Ocarina (the app not the Zelda game). I doubt Nintendo will do anything about that either.

Can't the Wii already run copied games? My uncle bought a Wii while he was in Thailand and all the games he has with it are copies.

Edit - Actually that's probably a chipped Wii or something, whereas this is just with the use of software. Or something like that, am I close?

His Wii is most likely chipped but this new hack means people should be able to run pirate copies or "backups" without any soldering or opening up the console.

I've just discovered that the thought of buying pirate games disgusts me. I've never given it much thought until now and I'm a tad surprised that I was so against the idea. I'd rather have no games than buy a pirate game.

How odd :?: .

I have an R4 for my DS, I have 58 DS games, the last one I got was Final Fantasy IV.

None of those games are on my R4, I only use it for the Mega Drive and ScummVM. I don't like the idea of having pirate games, I like building up a collection of great games I can keep, nothing good about having a memory card full of games or a cupboard full of blank discs.

This is bad for Wii Homebrew. It means Nintendo is more likely to block it out with a firmware update :(

They can't since Twilight Princess can't be patched. All Nintendo can do is regularly block the saves in firmware updates but even then, those measures will only last a matter of days if not hours.

Nintendo have patched Twilight Princess, as the old Twilight hack doesn't work with it anymore, because TP detects it and stops it happening or removes it if it's already there. The modders released a new one in less than a day, though.

That's what I mean. Nintendo didn't patch the game but they prevented the save from being loaded onto the Wii. All the creators of the homebrew exploit have to do is re-sign the hacked save and it will run again. This cycle will continue for the rest of the Wii's lifespan because the actual game executable can't be patched. They would have to physically replace all of the TP disks that have been released so far and I can't see many people taking them up on that, even if they offered to do it for free ;)

That's a bit of a bummer for me if true. I was considering selling my chipped Wii around xmas time, but I might as ell keep it and get a few GC games as even US GC games will boot-up on a modded Wii. But a USB HD solution would mean a nice rise in sales for such portable HD 'solutions'.

But as with everything in the piracy world, it's only ever a matter if time before it becomes widespread like the R4 on the DS. Which means even greater HW sales for ninty.

If you install the homebrew channel does that make your Wii reigon free for gamecube games?

Nintendo have put some stuff I've never heard of around chips to stop modding and the guy who made this exploit to run back ups has abandoned it after it was leaked earlier.
