How does this stack up with the PS3?

Wii U has sold 400,000, PS3 has sold 68 million.

So there's some way to go yet.

Obviously not.

I mean they have said that by selling 1 game the system becomes profitable for them, which is presumably a lot better than either MS or Sony normally start out and you'd think means its probably about even costs (remember on top of parts you have labour, shipping, storage, retail costs, not even taking into account marketing), but its not what Nintendo do, they normally make money straight away on the hardware.

Sony didn't manage to ship 400,000 units for US launch apparently, so better.

Well considering it's higher than the Wii Launch, I'd say that's a great performance for them.

Wii launch was 600k in the first eight days, so not quite, although if they can keep the thing in stock (which doesn't seem to be an issue at the moment, for better or for worse) and can keep sales high then they might manage to sell more consistently and beat the Wii over Christmas. That seems quite unlikely, but stranger things have happened.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the attachment rate is for New Super Mario Bros U. I predict it will be very high. If the Wii U sold 400,000 I suspect Mario sold 200,000, and in the run-up to Christmas it should remain a very popular software choice with the console.

What will be interesting is to see how the 3rd Party titles sell. If 2 or 3 manage to sell in significant numbers then it should help convince publishers to fund the 3rd Party stuff for the near future at least.

I think launch games like Mass Effect 3 and Batman will be overlooked. I predict first week numbers of 40,000 each maximum in America, followed by a sharp decline.

You don't get weekly numbers for sales in the US.

I think a good run would be 100,000 sales for a title like that in November, seems possible. I suppose of the 5 big ports (ME3, Darksiders 2, Batman AA, AC3 and Black Ops 2), the latter two have the better chance at good sales purely down to when they were released.

Its hard to deny its a really good launch lineup of 3rd Party stars though, I mean yeah they are all games already out elsewhere, but they are big games. Possible they will canabalise each others sales I guess.

This is Nintendo's Dreamcast generation.
I look forward to unappreciated gem's while the hardware sales remain firmly in the toilet.

Nah, they've got one more generation of success due before they return to the toilet. It's Microsoft's turn to have a console sell like gooseberry fool.

Ahh yes the Third Console Curse, considering the trouble MS had with early 360's this should be a barrel of laughs ;)

This time the machine will blow up as you're opening the box.

Actually they as that alongside nint last time out, it's Sonys turn next.

Though with a full dose of mattricking kinectoshite it is still possible.

Wut? Sony's console sold like crap relative to their previous consoles, much like the N64 sold like crap compared to the SNES and NES, never mind the Saturn. Microsoft's third console is coming up, and as per tradition it's going to suck salewise.

You'd love that wouldn't you Delusi?

The real test for the Wii U is not now, it's six to twelve months from now when all the hardcore early adopters have their console already and Sony and Microsoft are preparing to launch their new offerings.
