There's a save there with empty progress in all 3 slots but with 15 Friend Credits to unlock some of the bonus features. Relevant because you can no longer actually earn those due to the online being shut down, so you'd otherwise be unable to unlock all of the bonus content.

The OP has instructions on what to do with the save file that you download from that link. I've pasted it below for the sake of convenience:

  • Rename downloaded save to "data.bin"
  • Paste the save into this folder on the SD Card (create these folders if you don't have them)
    private/wii/title/r3mp
  • On the Wii U, in Wii mode and in the data management section, transfer from the SD Card to the Wii memory

Wrong, it's better than at least one of the Prime games.

It's dreadful on every level, and saying otherwise is a wicked trick to play on the unsuspecting innocent.

The gameplay is pretty good, it's just the atrocious story that brings it right down.

Nope, it's a great Metroid in which Samus actually feels like she should. Has some excellent boss fights as well.

Other M is like Dragon Age 2, it gets a lot more gooseberry fool than it deserves and everyone who says you should skip it is talking rubbish.

I like Other M and think it gets too much gooseberry fool thrown at it but no. No strawberry floating way.

I'm juggling Prime 1 with Ocarina and other things so I've only just picked up the morph ball. The Wii controls make moving around a lot easier than the tank controls of the GameCube while keeping the ability to lock on easily to enemies. I'm still impressed by how good this looks, for a game that's originally over 10 years old, and the music is still as incredible as ever.

How big is the download? I will get it but I don't have an external hard disk sorted for my Wii U yet. :/ Although I can possibly clear a partition..

Gecko, unfortunately you won't be able to plug in a drive and just use a certain partion for Wii U usage; when you plug in a drive, the console will format it for its own use. The Wii U can use drives of up to 2TB; you can connect a larger drive but the extra space won't be accessible.

To download Metroid temporarily, plug in a USB stick (after formatting, you'd probably need a 16Gb one) and download it to that. Once you get a hard drive you can re-download it to that (or, connect both the USB stick and the hard drive to the U and then use the 'file move' option - I haven't tried this myself).

What does this give you? I started Prime yesterday but haven't got very far. Should I restart with one of these files or are the bonus features pointless?

You need them to unlock extras like galleries and the ability to take screenshots.

I've now got the charge beam and morph ball bomb. I got a bit lost so I ended up in Magmoor Caverns. I had a feeling that I needed to pick up the Varia Suit first and a bit of exploration confirmed this

Getting lost led to me doing a bit of exploring which made me remember how excellently the world has been created as each area links to others in a way that I don't think that I saw again until Dark Souls. I disabled the hint system so that I could be left to my own devices and explore new areas of world at my own pace as I picked up new abilities.

I think that I only completed this once so my aim of getting all the items and scans isn't as straightforward as it would be for other games. This means that a lot of the time, while things look familiar, I have to examine the area carefully to look for clues about hidden secrets.

Been playing a bit of Prime. It's been a while since I've played a Metroid game and I'm really enjoying it. Just got the Varia suit, and have decided to wander back to the ship to have an explore around there.
