Here's the worldwide box-office chart as it looks at the moment.

1 Titanic $1,842.9B
2 The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King $1,119.3B
3 Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest $1,066.2B
4 Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone $976.5M
5 Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End $961M

It's looking like The Dark Knight will eventually reach $1billion worldwide, but even a film with this level of hype, critical reception and record-breaking success will fall massively short of Titanic.

In the US, Batman has actually come closer than any other film to making more than Titanic (but will still end up more than $50million behind it). But America is only part of the picture - Titanic would still have a lead in the hundreds of millions extra gained across the world.

I don't think Titanic will ever be beaten, unless it's out of necessity due to rising ticket prices (and even then they'd have to rise significantly, like 50 per cent).

No. The consumer mindset has changed - more people went out to the cinema ten years ago, when TVs were less advanced, tickets were cheaper and piracy was trickier.

That is highly depressing.

And no, it won't overtake it, not by a longshot.

I sure bloody hope so. It's depressing seeing that complete shower of gooseberry fool as the leading box office draw of all time.

Titanic's a great film. It's not perfect, but I can think of far worse films which might have been the highest grossers of all time (three of them are listed in the first post.)

I like it, too. The last hour is just magnificent. The scope of it is quite astounding.

Yeah it's pretty good. Dunno if it should have won Best Picture though.

What is "it", and whose argument are you challenging? My own post makes the clear point that Batman hasn't a chance.

It was nominated with LA Confidential, so no, it shouldn't have won.

Yeah, the first couple of hours are a bit twee, and there's the odd clunker of a line, but it's still a bit of a guilty pleasure. Then when it gets to the final hour, it's genuinely great - really amazingly directed, hugely impressive in scope, and quite moving in places. And say what you like about 'em, but Leo and Kate have great chemistry.

I agree. The entire sinking sequence is a stunning piece of cinematography.

EDIT: And Kate Winslet gets her kit off. Instant win.

Your right, it should have got Cameron a kick in the teeth along with anyone at the studio as the movie was a major peice of gooseberry fool.

But is it the biggest if you consider inflation?

I thought the Phantom Menace might of beaten it, word must of got round quick

Edit: Phantom Menace is still better than Titanic though
