PostWill the Switch become the best selling videogame console of all time?

As at 31st December 2020 the Switch had sold just shy of 80m.

It will likely cruise past 100m this year, overtaking the 360 (84m), the PS3 (87m), the Wii (102m) and PSOne (102.5m).

It likely won't reach the PS4 sales (115m) by the end of year but won't be far off.

But the real challenge is meeting the juggernauts PS2's 155m, and the DS' 154m.

What say you Grcade, will it become the best selling videogame console of all time?

Depends what Nintendo's strategy with the "Switch Pro" is, IMO.

Probably not. I think it will get comfortably over the 100 million mark, maybe something like 130m but 150+ seems unlikely.

It does depend on how they handle the platform over the next few years though, if a true successor is some way off and all we get are revisions that count toward the Switch sales total for another 3 years then it's not out of the question

Yeah, this is probably what it will come down to, you're right. Say they're looking at 110m by 31st December 2021 of the base and lite models, how many of those 110m will double dip on a Pro? Wouldn't take a huge % for them to get into the ball park of 155m, especially when you add in 20-30m for 2022.

You have to assume a Pro at the end of this year/2022 means they'll be looking to support it to 2023, and beyond into 2024. That fits with the 7 year cycle they've spoken about before.

I think it's going to happen.

Cool

My expert analysis is now "yeah maybe?"

It certainly doesn't look to be plateauing yet

Good. Now, don't look for a new house until the bet is won or loss please ;)

I know I always bang on about it (because it's a version I'd really like to see), but a TV only version with no battery and screen components would be a great addition to the line. It would be tiny, dirt cheap to make, plus would have double dip potential for existing owners. If they released that towards the end of the hardware cycle I could imagine a big bump in sales.

Why? Or do you mean the TV only version would be boosted in terms of power etc?

What's the double-dip potential - surely you could just buy a second dock instead of a second console?

PS2 is still so impressive when you think about it. Anything that comes close to it has had at least one significantly different model type included in its numbers (GameBoy + GameBoy Color, all the different DS flavours etc.) but other than being shrunk down for the slim the PS2 numbers are all from what is essentially the exact same machine

Yeah, I didn't include the combined GameBoy in my OP because I feel the Color was a new system.

The PS2 numbers are incredible but the inclusion of a DVD player definitely helped a lot.

Depends on what the new Switch is supposed to be. Is it a Switch 2 or a 0.5 Pro model?

The main console is still close to £300, so you'd expect there to be substantial room to grow. Has there ever been a machine that has gone this long without a price cut?

Having a TV only Switch on the main TV and the OG Switch in a child's bedroom, that sort of thing.

But the dock wouldn't play any games so you'd only have one console.

Basically Nintendo said "Here's this hybrid console/handheld," then said "Here's a slightly cheaper one that's only a handheld." This is clearly working very well for them from the sales, but logically there must also be a subset of individuals with no interest in taking their console out and about with them, and who just want to play Zelda and Mario at home on a nice big screen. Catering to that market with a cheaper model (because it would be cheaper to make) would, I think, provide a big bump to sales.

I'm not convinced on this. The Switch isn't ridiculously expensive, I think these people just buy a Switch and don't take it out. Yes there might be a small subset that would only buy it if it was £50-£100 cheaper without handheld but I'm not sure its worth the cost of bringing a new product to market to cater to them.

It certainly could do, I think the next couple of years are key games wise if it will or not. We have some big title games already announced to be coming in the next few years, BoTW 2, 2 Pokémon games with one being a brand new game, Metroid Prime 4 is announced (although no idea when it’ll be releasing, late 2022 at the absolute earliest in my opinion). They are planning to support the Switch for around 7 years too and we’ve only just past 4 with over 80 million consoles sold so if it keep selling insanely well as it currently is, it really could be possible to get near the 150 million mark.

They certainly seem ambitious to try and achieve the best selling console status too, we know they’ve upped production to 30 million for this financial year, if thats 30 million without the heavily rumoured but currently nonexistent upgraded Switch then they’ll probably be pushing for 40 million consoles produced this year (although that seems an overly ambitious number considering Microsoft and Sony will also be trying to ramp production of their new consoles). If the upgraded model is actually a thing, will the standard and Lite models get a price cut? I can’t see them leaving the current one at £280 and the Lite at £200 if a new model comes out, even if thats £350, cutting the price of the other ones, even just by £30-£50 would have a massive impact on the overall sales too.
