This update will no doubt be rolled out on thousands if not millions of old devices, rendering them nigh-on unusable. Said devices would probably be fine if running the OS they were built for, but MS will eventually come out and say they're not supporting that OS anymore, or can't provide security for it. Leaving poorer users worldwide with a choice between a machine running at a snail's pace (as the software is way ahead of the hardware) or one that's prone to viruses and hackers and spyware. Lovely.

Given their market share and the extent to which modern society relies on personal computing, this approach is simply, in my opinion, irresponsible. There's no doubt in my mind MS could afford to maintain support for a plethora of older OSs, thus enabling users who simply can't afford an upgrade continued access to a functioning computer.

Grr.

Hardware needs are broadly the same when you exclude tpm for Windows 11 and many of the wizzy bells will disable themselves.

Windows 10 is support until 2025 for security updates.

I'm at 73% installed. I want to see this thing through, but I also want to go to bed. I have to say, the download took absolutely no time and assuming that they haven't implemented one of those progress bars where the final 1% takes longer than the first 99%, it looks like the whole process is going to be pretty swift.

My processor (i7 6700k) isn't currently compatible with Windows 11, so I couldn't install it even if I wanted to. It seems if you want Windows 11, and have an Intel processor, it needs to be 8th gen or later. :|

There is an exception, which is for one of the chips used in Surface Laptops. No idea why that would be...

OK, it's time to restart. Wish me well!

First impressions:

The install was quick and painless.

My start bar has moved.

Ooh, I wonder if my work laptop will have the update ready? I guess it's probably different for networked PCs, don't know how it works.

Depends on your work setup, I would be very surprised if any managed network allowed this sort of update to just roll, it would be a it support nightmare with compatibility issues and junk.

Usually businesses take a good while as need to test everything to make sure it still works, a sensible place would have started that using the beta and just needed to a quick sanity check test after realease rather than everything but most don't have the spare resources to do it.

Ehhh, Microsoft support their operating systems for a LONG time, especially compared to Mobile phone systems. Windows XP came out in October 2001 and Microsoft didn't stop providing security updates for it until April 2014. Windows 7 only stopped getting updates in January last year, having been released in July of 2009. I'd say that over 10 years of support is more than people getting their moneys worth.

No problems with the install on my laptop here, seems to be working fine.

Depends on your work setup

Will probably only get to see it in about 5 years then

I can see a lot of business holding given windows 10 support is good to 2025.

Just found out that Windows 95 originally cost $375 (adjusted for inflation).

The install was very pain free, taking less time than a typical download and install from the PlayStation Store. Impressive for an operating system.

I haven't had much time to play with it yet, but it feels like a skin on Windows 10, rather than something fundamentally different. I'm ok with that though as Windows does what it needs to do. From what I've read, it's close to fully compatible with anything that ran on Windows 10. No need to reinstall other software either. If it delivers improved performance and improved touch functionality, I'll be happy. Being free was a big bonus!

If anyone is wondering whether to download, so far my opinions are positive.

My Intel CPU is more than fast enough to run W11 but it's apparently the wrong type of Intel CPU so it's not compatible. :|

Plus I don't have TPM.

The thing is, my CPU and motherboard are still both absolutely fine hardware-wise for modern needs. Seems a bit of a dick move to me.

Thanks SS. Anyone else taken the plunge yet? I've got a Surface Laptop 3 which is eligible for Win11 but I've yet to download it. I like what Win 10 offers and don't feel the need to change yet

11 is basically the same with some visual tweaks, it will definitely be worth it on a surface as it is more touch friendly.

The only thing that really takes some getting used to is the start bar with things being center aligned (though you can make it left if you prefer)

Realistically there is no good reason not to upgrade as anything that works on 10 will work on 11 as fundamentally it's the same, it just looks considerably better.

Its for security.

You can argue you don't care about that and so why are they pushing it but really you are wrong. Security is important and for far far too long proper security on machines has been "something only businesses need" which is daft.

No I'm not. What a silly response.

There's a vast swathe of debate going on right now about this decision. To try to make out it's a black and white no-brainer is frankly ridiculous.

Forcing everybody down the hardware security path if they want to carry on using Windows was not the only option they could have taken.

It unlocks more for the future.

TPM can be used to store tokens for all sort of stuff, it can be a step towards extra security for programs, websites etc. not just hardware.

By forcing the issue they create the baseline and the "what will be available" if they half arsed it it would take decades to enact change.

Microsoft has historically been terrible and pushing change and support billions of options for forever which leads it I credibly complicated software and odd bugs, this is a change to that and its good.

Change and progress is a good thing.

I'd have to upgrade my PC to use 11 anyway so will be sticking with 10
