The release preview is now out, I'm on the beta channel and have it but it is labeled "release preview" so I presume it is both beta and release preview channels.

First impressions, how strawberry float it sucks. It has so so so many annoying as strawberry float bugs and annoyances that will take some getting used to.

Here is what I have found so far.

1. Context menus for Start menu, open apps and start menu icons, web pages (open in new tab, save image etc.) open below the window unless you change a registry setting to make the menus run in classic mode (https://winaero.com/how-to-enable-full- ... indows-11/)

2. The start menu is bloody massive! Its so unbelievlely thick and it hurts, you can't resize it, you can auto hide it, but it also unhides under your windows unless you do the fix in item 1 above.

3. UAC is a disgrace. Clearly a dev half remade it and then got distracted by something as it doesn't say "Yes" and "No" as the button options as in Windows 10, instead it says "Remember Me" and "C", the window title is just "O" and it doesn't remember gooseberry fool as it asks each time like Windows 10. Oh and it defaults to "C" for Cancel so if your used to auto-piloting UAC you now can't

4, Start pins sort of suck. I used Tiles and they are gone, you can pin stuff but it is an unorganised list as you can't group pins, give headings, folders, nothing, just a load of pinned stuff, and if you had tiles on Windows 10 when you upgrade that is all one and replaced with a bunch of default guff you have to remove one at a time.

So so far, it sucks, its nippy and looks nice but holy strawberry float its a buggy ass mess.

You can elevate without prompting using group policy if you want to avoid UAC in certain situations. At least on windows 10 you can.

from memory it's gpedit > local computer policy > windows > security settings > local policy > security options, the elevation prompt options are towards the bottom of the list

I know you can, but reducing security is a gooseberry fool idea. UAC works just fine, it just looks like this

It's taken me forever to get used to Windows 10, so i ain't touching this with a 20ft pole.

Dependning on how you use it you might actually be ok. If you treat Windows 10 like and pin to task bar and the like you are probably not going to notice much difference.

Issue I have is I embraced Metro with Windows 8 and loved the tiles, groups and folders and that all scrapped busting you back to Windows 7 where Start is basically just a repo of app in folders with some pinned favourites like 7 had.

You can also re-align the start icons on the left rather than centre as they are by default.

My problem with a centre aligned dock/taskbar is that everything moves whenever you add or remove anything. When its left aligned you can add new icons and all the existing ones will stay exactly where they were, so muscle memory can stay the same. I don't see the advantage of being centre aligned.

Yeah there isn't an advantage at all, especially when the clock and system tray are still on the right and the start at is still full width.

If it was a dock that had only app icons like Make or popOS I would get it but as it is it's pointless, luckily you can make it left aligned which is near enough the only setting you can change in the damn thing.

When Windows 8 first came out, it looked so awful i purposely bought a Windows 7 PC a few days before release instead, was a good decision too as i had nearly 10 trouble free years using that system.

I am kind of excited for Windows 11 only in the way I get excited for a lot of things tech wise. I really like Windows 10, its funny as just certain windows have really grabbed me and others haven't 10 is the one I have liked the most since XP, I was crazy for XP and really didn't want to go past it. I had this whole idea how Windows should remake XP into a budget OS for cheap people who want an easy to use OS and call it Windows Gold ..... I have used types of Linux and there ok but I always just feel happier on windows and im not keen on Mac OS either to be honest.

My current Laptop is a refurb model that came on 10. I do kind of get worried about not having a proper copy of the OS if anything goes wrong but today I found a sealed copy of 10 for £25 so grabbed it (its 10 home and my laptops on 10pro but oh well).

My Dads PC kind died recently , its hardrive totally died which would be an easy swap for me but he has no back up of it , no installation disc and luckily it was under warranty so its going back but it makes me miss the days when I had a stack of pirate Windows OS's like a 98SE and A XP disc ,its just reassuring and I have no issues slapping a fake on if a machine came with an original but not the stuff to put it back on in case of emergency. This has however led to me making back ups of my current hard-drive and repair disks and such just because when it happens to someone else it makes you think about it.

1% downloaded...

I have to admit I like the idea of shiny new Windows, but after an update bricked my phone recently, I'm slightly worried! Hopefully it wont brick my laptop. :slol:

I've been on this since it the beta went up, its way way better now than when it started. Took a good while to used to some of the changes but all in I'm impressed with it.

I never notice much of a difference between different operating systems or internet browsers. All the ones I've used have functioned well. Maybe I've just been lucky.

Will be good if it comes with some games as good as that old pinball one (Space Pinball?). Not forgetting Solitaire and perhaps a return from Minesweeper! The Games section is always my first port of call for a new operating system.

One of the key things I'm interested in is the touch functionality improvements, together with Android app support. Convertible laptops have such potential in my opinion, but are somewhat lacking in content support. Great, this thing switches to a 15 inch tablet, but when there's nothing worth downloading for it, it's a bit of a waste.

Honestly I'm tempted to dump Windows for Linux on all my devices.

Stuff like this is why I could never actively root for MS as a participant in the games biz - I've owned Xboxes previously simply due to the exclusives I wanted most (that weren't on Nintendo platforms) but I've always wanted Sony to come out on top.

The way Microsoft - one of the richest organisations in the world - handles OS updates is unacceptable. This update will no doubt be rolled out on thousands if not millions of old devices, rendering them nigh-on unusable. Said devices would probably be fine if running the OS they were built for, but MS will eventually come out and say they're not supporting that OS anymore, or can't provide security for it. Leaving poorer users worldwide with a choice between a machine running at a snail's pace (as the software is way ahead of the hardware) or one that's prone to viruses and hackers and spyware. Lovely.

Given their market share and the extent to which modern society relies on personal computing, this approach is simply, in my opinion, irresponsible. There's no doubt in my mind MS could afford to maintain support for a plethora of older OSs, thus enabling users who simply can't afford an upgrade continued access to a functioning computer.

Grr.
