Remind me - how much will the new Xbox 360 dashboard cost me? And how much did the iPhone/iPod Touch software upgrade to access the Apps Store cost?

Remind me - how much is Xbox Live Gold? Not that you'll need it for that update, I just wanted to get my fix of XBL bashing.

The story is that we want it, but have the willpower to not pay it. Makes us look cooler.

Gotcha.

Yeah, I'd like Xbox Live Gold, but my money is tied up in Blackjack and hookers.

Believe it or not, a Mac has a USB port and guess what? You can plug whatever mouse you like into it and have as many buttons as your fingers can click.

Criticism = null and void.

Also:

Nice tangent there. I don't agree with the iPhone paid-for software updates, I don't understand the logic behind them (having accounts that require they charge money...hmmm). I think it's ridiculous profiteering, and Apple seems to always get away with this gooseberry fool while Microsoft would be dragged through every court known to man if they tried it on.

You could make that comparison with anything, though. How much will this apple cost me? And how much did that lovely orange cost me earlier on?

If you're looking for people who will defend OS X to the hilt, well, I'm not sure Carlos has posted in here yet. You're only going to find reasoned logic in the rest of us.

My GF has a Mac it's pretty nice although I can't stand the way the Ipod is going. It was bad enough not been able to use it with multiple computers and now paid updates and having to pay for dev tools is plain annoying.

Anyway I have Vista the 64-bit edition its all right, locks up a bit to often opening files and such, but no real major problems. Still have to use XP to play a couple of games though.

Amusement under late capitalism is the prolongation of work.

This. But it sure does like to update regularly.

Once a month?

Otherwise it's just email junk filters and Windows Defender.

You have to pay to be able to sell an app on the app store, I think. Or get access to the iPhone development kit. Xcode is still free though, and that allows you to develop for computers.

There are no paid-for updates on the Mac. There are paid-for upgrades.

Windows released an update pretty much every year in the late nineties, and expected you to pay for them. Windows 95, Windows NT, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and all that.

Mac updates are in a similar kind of time frame. Tiger was released 2005, Leopard in 2007. Snowleopard is coming out next year.

Pedantic but:

Windows NT and 2000 weren't in the same market as 95, 98 and ME.

And they are all terrible!

If I got £1 everytime I accidentally press the side buttons just gripping the strawberry floating thing, I'd be a millionaire.

I so want the iphone after seeing someone at uni use it and getting to hold it in my hands. But 8 gigs or 16 gigs only? For how much a month? And pay how much extra for a handset? mummy strawberry float THE HELL OFF Apple. It's crazy expensive, I'd buy it if I was rich, but I can't justify that price even if I get to earn 50k a year. It's an amazing piece of kit, but the price is astonishingly steep, I don't feel I should work for that price either.

Tell me - what is there in Leopard that couldn't have been achieved with an update to Tiger?

Yes.

I'm not even running it anywhere near how you 'should' (as I only have one PC).

But it's great to have access to my Work from anywhere, and be able to upload a new file to my account and have it automatically sync with my desktop PC.
