PostWindows 7 - Already Better Than Vista?

Windows Vista is better than its reputation, but its reputation is pretty bad. During the press briefing for Windows 7 at Microsoft's Professional Developers Conference (PDC), corporate vice president for Windows product management Mike Nash insisted Microsoft had learned from the Vista experience.

Judging by early Windows 7 code released at PDC, the signs are that it really has.

Microsoft is making all the right noises: everything that works on Vista will also work on Windows 7, it will be faster on the same hardware, it will run longer on the same batteries, it will be more reliable.

In other words, whereas Vista was two steps forward and one step back from Windows XP, there should be no downside to Windows 7 over Windows Vista.

A day spent with a Windows 7 preview build - Milestone 3, running on a laptop loaned for the purpose (Dell XPS M1339, core duo 4.6GHz, with 3GB RAM) tends to confirm that view. Windows 7 feels more polished than Vista, even in the preview, and performance is good.

I'm still an XP user myself. I'll skip Vista and wait for Win7 - which is sounding quite promising.

Windows 7 runs great on a Core 2 duo 4.6GHZ with 3GB ram?

Whoopee strawberry floating do, I'm impressed.

I'm not surprised it runs well on that beast of a laptop. But I suppose you're not going to demo it on a shitheap. It's all looking good for Windows 7, Vista isn't too bad, it just has a few problems.

Cue mactards in 3...2...1 ;)

I've had no problems with Vista at all. It gets a bad reputation but works perfectly for me (and anyone I know who uses it).

I'm still suprised 7 looks no different Vista, is it going to be pushed as the next OS?

Vista looked exactly the same as XP at this stage. The differeances are under the hood until the artists come along and wack some visual styles on it.

Yeah, SP1 fixed pretty much any problem I had with it.

This. Although I pretty much use my laptop exclusively for web browsing/word processing/other stuff for Uni so I've hardly tested the limits of Vista's functionality.

I have no problems with vista, I think it's great, so far, it's not crashed on me once.

Sticking with XP for now, until I get a new laptop.

I’ve used Vista, it’s not bad at all. It’s a little power-hungry at times, but that’s just my old Pentium D talking.

Anyway, you'd expect it to be better than Vista at this point. They don't just build it all from scratch each time, you know. They'll have used the basic framework from Vista (hence the current visual style), and built around that.

Vista has crashed once for me so far - though that probably had something with me turning the Wi-Fi switch to on while the laptop was booting up.

This. But it sure does like to update regularly.

I really don't know why people whine about Vista. I've never had any problems at all. Hogs too much memory? Go and read about SuperFetch. Don't like the security features? Turn them off. If you're an idiot, that is. It works differently to XP? Of course it bloody does. That's why it's not called "XP". :x

Better than them selling all the updates as a new version of the operating system. *casts steely gaze towards Apple, and their 5 versions of Mac OS X*

That's not really a good comparison though... the five versions are all fairly major updates. Your nearest comparison would be Software Update in any version of OS X - exactly the same thing as Windows Update! - but sensationalism is more fun.

They're essentially Service Packs, and you know it. You're just trying to justify paying to update your Mac. Which already cost a strawberry floating bundle when you first bought it.
