I really wouldn't go back to 7 now after 8.1.

Incentivising something people don't want with something else people don't want is a bit odd.

I currently use W7 more than I use W8.1 and while I quite liked W8 when I got used to it, there's definitely more faffing around with it and I don't miss any of the features at all apart from the corner right click menu. I really, really don't miss any of the charms bars.

Because once you get used to the new stuff it isn't as bad. Also performance wise it is better, for laptops the battery life is better. It is a step forward, you just have to learn its ways.

It's horribly inconsistent, and nigh-on unusable with a mouse. It's a tablet operating system that Microsoft have decided they want to use on real computers, and it ends up being gooseberry fool at both. strawberry float, it makes Windows ME look like a good idea.

Its very usable with a mouse. I have it on 3 PC's now all using mice.

You just have to try and you get used to the charm bars.

I use it as a desktop OS, ignoring all the metro stuff, and I find it perfectly fine.

Same. And it runs better than 7 on an SSD.

We should migrate GRcade to Flarum. :toot:

I do that on work laptop and pc and ny home laptop. On my RT however i am exclusive TwinUI which works really well on the tablet.

You just have to configure it a little. Stuff like boot to desktop and app list (for the really anti-tile people) makes a massive difference and gives it a much more PC feel.

The App list is nothing like the start menu was. It is just designed for tablets, I cant even boot straight to desktop because I have to sign in to my account. And let's not even talk about the apps, especially the settings app :fp:

The only good thing about it is the performance. MS must be pretty happy, everyone will jump into windows 9 faster than you would jump into a chocolate river.

Opened up my mind?

I find 8.1 betters 7 in every single way. There's no disadvantage to having it, your gaining a faster OS.

Sure MS should have had a different approach that was not just copying what the mobile market was doing, but now that you can actually use W8 as a regular desktop OS, you see its advantages over 7.

I'm still on 8. I treat the Metro interface as a glorified bookmarks menu. Other than that, I have no problems with the Desktop functionality. I should get on with upgrading to 8.1 though.

You'd have to pay me to use Windows 8.1 with bing. Crap mixed with crap. :dread:

Hoping Windows 9 will be a true replacement for Windows 7.

Yep, all the PCs in our house have it (2 laptops, 2 desktops and a tablet). Clearly the tablet is best with it, but I still use a mouse with it on occasion (mainly for software not optimised for a tablet).

Yes?

Does anyone else think MS are insane to have effectively broken Skydrive/Onedrive on Windows 8.1? They have tied the service to your login; so you have to sign into the OS with your MSA in order to get access to your files on OneDrive. This is an awful idea for several reasons.

1. Signing in with an MS account rather than a local account is simply a bad idea. Anyone who does so and has their account hacked, which is alarmingly likely when you look at the figures for Hotmail, deserves everything they get for being dumb enough to hand the keys to their PC to an external server over the internet.
2. People who need to use multiple accounts, say for school or work, will be unable to access their OneDrive on at least of these accounts without having to login via a browser; which seems like a step backwards.
3. People who want to create and share a OneDrive account for the purpose of a collaborative project will be inhibited.

MS need to reinstate the ability to sign in separately for the service. Otherwise they are putting themselves at a disadvantage to competitors like Dropbox on their own damn platform, which is just stupid.

You don't need to log in with Microsoft account, that is one way but you can also use a local account and the link your Microsoft account to it (its how I do it at work as we have a domain and stuff). It then means you use a local / domain account and the link gives you access to all the Microsoft account bits.

Just checked into that. That is for domain accounts, not local accounts, it won't help me on my own machine. In the meantime I am have been using Dropbox until MS gets around to making their cloud storage service actually functional on their own lead OS. What a joke.
