My faithful old desktop was on it's last legs so i've had to buy a new one. Been using windows 7 for over 10 years, so this whole Windows 10 shenanigans is gonna take some getting used to.

Got Firefox installed now along with my antivirus software, will likely plug in my portable hard drive next so i can access all my stuff from the old PC and transfer it over.

Anti virus??? Windows Defender is actually one of the top AVs now, anything else unless for a good reason is pretty much a waste of resources.

I already have a norton subscription, so there's no point in me not downloading it.

It was really good on the old PC, never had any problems with it.

But again it does carry a little bit of risk so make sure you have a backup first.

This actually worked perfectly, and took no time at all. Thanks!

Turns out I don't have TPM 2.0 though, so still not eligible for upgrade. :|

Check your bios, there might be a setting for discreet or embedded or something similar. Modern CPUs can have it built in but mobo might default to descrete and as there isn't a physical one shows as there being none.

The scalping happening on TPM 2.0 modules is nuts, before the announcement you could pick one up for £12 to £20, the same module is now going for between £60 to £100 in some places.

The worst part is probably people who are trying to get them may not even need them simply because a BIOS option isn't enabled.

If people aren't willing / to daft to check they deserve to be scalped.

There are a lot of people that bought them that should have held off panic buying (unless they are on the insider program). MS removed the PC health check app from their site a few days ago due to so many people being informed that their compooper doesn't meet the required spec but not informing you why.

With these minimum system requirements in mind, the PC Health Check app was intended to help people check if their current Windows 10 PC could upgrade to Windows 11. Based on the feedback so far, we acknowledge that it was not fully prepared to share the level of detail or accuracy you expected from us on why a Windows 10 PC doesn’t meet upgrade requirements. We are temporarily removing the app so that our teams can address the feedback. We will get it back online in preparation for general availability this fall. In the meantime, you can visit our minimum system requirements page here to learn more.

Interesting times ahead.

Someone wrote an unofficial checker that will give you actual feedback on why your machine can't run Windows 11

Sounds like they've misjudged the TPM requirements to me. I wonder if they'll review that aspect of the OS?

Perhaps they thought the percentage of W10 users with the right TPM hardware was much higher than the reality.

I am sure they could have just looked at the number of consumer mainboards that don't come with it on the board, it would have maybe given them pause for thought. I doubt they bothered checking in any meaningful way and just assumed.

I was aware I didn't have the TPM 2.0 module but there is a slot on my Gigabyte mobo. meh.

Microsoft based on their recent patching and updates don't ever bother actually checking anything anymore before releasing it, so they probably had no idea to begin with.

Not really, all the top Google results when I checked what a TPM was led with it being a physical component you would need. It's not unreasonable to think that any layperson would assume that's what's needed.

I don't expect a "layperson" gives a toss about the Windows 11 preview enough to download the checker, check if it works, go buy a new computer part, and then install a preview of Windows.

I probably won't bother upgrading to Windows 11 until it either becomes necessary or I next upgrade my PC.
