I would love them to come out and say that they are going to allow ARM compiled EXE's on 9 RT (if there is an RT). I think it will make the platform boom if they allowed it to be treated like full fat windows.

I'm pretty sure RT is getting the axe. MS put out a statement this year basically saying they did not intend on supporting three platforms, which heavily implies they are abandoning it.

Yeah, its stupid though. If they unlocked it so companies could make ARM compiled EXE's it would be a roaring success as it is a good cheap option.

It isn't without reason, RT was always a compromise in order to re-purpose Windows 8 to function on cheaper processors with different instruction sets. IMO, I think they saw it as a stop-gap solution to getting the the new OS environment out there rather than something they intended to support long term. They don't really want it to develop as its own thing.

I thought the idea they were promoting was that instead of Windows x86, Windows RT and Windows phone there would be shared base across each platform.

The biggest problem with Windows 8 was the enforcement of Metro and its apps, which was the most half-baked infrastructure system since the Blackberry Playbook. The best thing about Windows 8.1 was that Microsoft has started to add options to officially ignore Metro. What appears to be the best thing about Windows 9 is that they're officially allowing you to completely ignore Metro.

The incremental improvements of Windows 8 was completely drowned out by the abortion that (still) is Metro. The fact that even the most hardened of Microsoft fanboy has to admit that Windows 8 is far better with unofficial programs to replace Metro's functionality and that Microsoft is basically officially implementing said unofficial programs in Windows 9 underlines how utterly terrible Metro is.

Its not called Metro anymore I don't think, anyway whatever you call it you've always been able to pretty much ignore it without having to install anything. The idea that Metro apps were 'enforced' at any point is ludicrous, its just not the way Windows has ever worked.

At the end of the day Metro is just a fancy UI option, there's nothing inherently wrong with it.

They changed it to "Modern UI" which is a terrible idea because in computing term things don't stay modern for very long and it will soon seem silly to say. If they have the same UI or something like it in fifteen years then it will seem ancient.

The French metro complained about them using metro as the name for it. Because people might start taking their tablet to work...

It never got an official "brand" name but in Windows when you do a run as it is referred to as TwinUI

No it was referred to as metro from the wp days then some tech company complained and MS have officially branded it the modern ui language. I preferred metro but oh well

A free upgrade from 8? That sounds too good to be true.

I'd say that was quite plausible. It would match Apple's free updates, and I think Microsoft really want people to start using metro apps on desktops. It would also make people less averse to buying Windows 8 PCs with 9 just around the corner.

There's also the small matter that people are used to buying tablets with the expectations of free OS updates.
