Operating systems should be visually neutral, they should sit well with any environment and theme.

MacOS went through the same trajectory, starting off nice, minimalist and clean, going through an ugly glossy phase in the mid-00s, then returning back to its roots.

Can't stand the brushed metal look. The dock is certainly better than the 2007 attempt, but there are still too many gradients and rounded edges for me. Give me flat colours and sharp lines every day of the week.

EDIT: Oh you changed the picture lol

Yeah it's a lot better, much more flat

The market has been crying out for designs made of something other than brushed metal for a long time, but that is most definitely not the solution!

I really quite like the fabric elements that MS have been using on some aspects of their surface line for a while now - something like that is much more of a positive step in the design of tech.

Just looks like someone has stuck that horrible wood-effect laminate over the top of it.

Loads of problems with Windows 10 at the moment:

Techradar wrote:Windows 10 gets yet another faulty update with broken Start menu

Come on Microsoft

Microsoft release a cumulative patch, KB4517389, only a few days ago which was supposed to fix a number of highly publicised errors, and while it seems to have fixed the printer problems that were plaguing Windows 10 recently, it seems like the Start menu continues to have issues.

If news that Microsoft has released a Windows 10 update in an attempt to fix issues, only to introduce new problems, seems familiar, that’s because Microsoft has had an astonishingly bad run of faulty updates recently.

Only a few days ago we reported on how another cumulative update, KB4524147, had introduced more bugs, and it seems that Microsoft has rushed out this new update to fix those bugs, while causing the Start menu to fail with a critical error.

As any Windows user knows, the Start menu is a pretty essential feature of Windows 10 – and being unable to use it is a huge problem.

Start menu woes

As Windows Latest points out, users on the Microsoft community forum and Reddit have been complaining that the October 8 update (another name for KB4517389) has been breaking the Start menu and causing a critical error.

According to Microsoft’s support documentation, the company claims that the issue is not significantly impacting a large number of users. That won’t be much comfort to the people who are experiencing the problem. However, Microsoft does say that it is investigating the reports of the broken Start menu, though it does appear like the company is stumped about why this issue is occurring.

It’s yet another round of bad news for Microsoft when it comes to faulty Windows 10 updates, and the company needs to get on top of this fast – otherwise its reputation could be irreparably damaged.

I've also had a number of silly glitches with the Xbox One dash, so I don't know what's going on with their software teams at the moment. Shambles.

Anyone got any first hand experience of any of the lower budget Microsoft Surface devices? Tempted by Surface Laptop Go (£549), Surface Laptop 3 (£795), or Surface Go 2 (£399).

I have an iPad Air2 which has been great but the battery life is starting to deteriorate. Plus I’d like a new device to replace an ancient laptop (12-14 yrs old) which takes minutes to do anything - opening excel or chrome takes 5 mins at least.

I’d like the option to connect via USB-A so I can connect a USB SD card reader to back up photos onto a networked NAS I have.

I’d use it for browsing, social media and some light Excel work. No gaming required on it.

Thanks

I have the Surface Go 2 and I went for the mid-tier one. I like it. I use it first and foremost as a tablet/ereader for university work but it comes in handy as a backup laptop. Battery life isn't great say, compared to an iPad but I can quite comfortably get through a day of research on it. The other downside is the small screen which isn't ideal for long periods of essay typing and the like but for browsing, social media i would be fine. The keyboard isn't included so that will push up the price a bit. But overall its a nice little computer and I've been happy with mine.

<edit> it doesn't have a USB A port but I just use an adaptor

How long would you say the battery lasts between charges?

I use it fairly intensively for university readings so charge it either daily or sometimes I get a day and a half out of the battery (depending on what I'm doing). I have't used it for the last 3 weeks due to the Easter holiday. It had gone from less then half battery to about 10% in 3 weeks. Not sure how that compares to iPad or Android tablets but I was ok with it.
