OrangeRKN's relief is palpable.

"They're leaving me be!" he cries with relief.

Rocsteady hands a shining bundle to The Alchemist Penguin.

"I know," says TAP coolly.

He withdraws an item from the bundle.

"But why?" stammers OrangeRKN.

"Because," replies TAP, approaching him,

"I told them to leave you to me."

With the same silver dagger that slit the throat of each of his Mafia, the Dogfather plunges the blade into the heart of OrangeRKN.

The bewildered Witch Doctor, unable to protect himself two days in a row, dies.

OrangeRKN is killed by the Wolf Mafia! He was a Witch Doctor.

The Dogfather smiles.
The last living Half-Wolf cackles.
The Wolves howl in triumph.

The Wolf Mafia have won the game!

...

My spirit still wanders these woods.

I act as a warning, a guide; I tell lost and lonely travellers - leave this place, never return.

For someone must protect the innocent from the menace that haunts this forest and town,

The Wolf Mafia:

Kezzer,
PaperMacheMario,
PsychicSykes,
VlaSoul,
The Wolves;

Dangerblade,
Rocsteady,
The Half-Wolves, who abandoned their humanity;

And their leader,
The Alchemist Penguin,
The Dogfather;

For they are the Wolf Mafia;

And Partasti is theirs!

...

What prompted me to run this game?

I thought it was a shame, given how highly anticipated full-on AYAW / Mafia style games used to be, that we'd not had a 'proper' one in such a long time. And I thought that if I could run one that was successful, with a base ruleset that was easy to understand and easy to implement, it might reinvigorate the tradition.

Why did you change the timings?

My commute takes place between 8am and 9am in the mornings, and 5pm and 6pm in the evenings.

But! As well as making the game runnable for me, it had to be playable. The flipping of the old "day phase" and "night phase" (hence Hidden Roles as opposed to Night Roles) wasn't so much a problem for activity times in my opinion - the only possible issue was the potentially small (four hours) timeslot between learning of Wolf kills and having to elect a Mayor. I figured anything later than 9pm would be too late a cut off and mean anyone not up early in the mornings would basically be excluded from the voting.

But the timescales worked because the 8am to 5pm hidden role phase didn't necessitate the announcing of results at or after 5pm. Basically, if Wolf kills and protection decision were in, I was in a position to announce. Which meant the village had more time to discuss during active hours.

Of course, the Wolf Mafia could deliberately wait until late to hinder the village's discussion. So I decided to give the Seers their results during the Hidden Role phase as soon as was practicable for me to do so, after they'd submitted their choices. Meaning that if the Wolf Mafia did opt to delay the village, they'd do so with the risk of knowing their possible targets had extra time to plot and share information.

The Vigilante could use their bullet during any Hidden Role phase; and this would take effect once submitted during the phase so long as the Protection decision was in.

So everything was in place - pretty much a Vanilla AYAW game at this point. I thought this would work as an ongoing template for future games. So below are the rules and role PMs - anyone is welcome to use or adapt these in future.

Human
You're the everyday hero of this story.
You must work with the village to try and identify the Wolf Mafia.
You will win the game if you are alive when all members of the Wolf Mafia have been killed.
You will lose the game if you die.

Vigilante
You're a renegade with a silver bullet. This is a HIDDEN ROLE.
A human, you must work with the village to try and identify the Wolf Mafia.
However, unlike other humans, you may shoot and kill one other player of your choosing, during the HIDDEN ROLE phase. (One use only.)
You will win the game if you are alive when all members of the Wolf Mafia have been killed.
You will lose the game if you die.

Witch Doctor
You're the keeper of life, and the bane of death. This is a HIDDEN ROLE.
A human, you must work with the village to try and identify the Wolf Mafia.
However, unlike other humans, you may protect one other player of your choosing (which can be yourself) from any form of death, during the HIDDEN ROLE phase. (One use per day, and you cannot choose the same target on consecutive nights.)
You will win the game if you are alive when all members of the Wolf Mafia have been killed.
You will lose the game if you die.

Seer
With your special sight, you might just be the key to winning the game. This is a HIDDEN ROLE.
A human, you must work with the village to try and identify the Wolf Mafia.
However, unlike other humans, you may target one other player of your choosing, during the HIDDEN ROLE phase, and their true identity will be revealed to you. (One use per day.)
You will win the game if you are alive when all members of the Wolf Mafia have been killed.
You will lose the game if you die.

Wolf
A secret member of the lycanthropic informed minority, your goal is to wreak havoc among the village.
Appearing to the village as a human, you must secretly work against the village to try and prevent them from identifying the Wolf Mafia.
Though the Dogfather, your leader, ultimately names your targets, you can conspire with them and the other wolves to choose kills and formulate your strategy.
You will win the game if at any point the Wolf Mafia includes an equal or greater number of living players than there are remaining living Human villagers.
You will also win the game if any member of the Wolf Mafia is still alive after the HIDDEN ROLES have carried out their actions on Friday 13th.
You will lose the game if all Wolf Mafia members are killed.
The Wolf Mafia can initially make three kills each day.
This number decreases by one each time they lose a team member.
However, this number will never decrease below zero.
If the Dogfather is killed, the wolves will mourn for a day, meaning they would miss the subsequent day's kills.

Dogfather
The leader of the pack. You head up the Wolf Mafia.
However, as you're not a Wolf yourself, you will appear as a Human to anyone who discovers your true identity during the game.
You must secretly work against the village to try and prevent them from identifying the Wolf Mafia.
You're responsible for submitting kills during the HIDDEN ROLE phase (you can delegate this to another wolf, but you must notify me in advance if you wish to do this. The same deadlines then apply to that wolf)
If you wish to, you can opt to not use any or all of your kills.
(I'll probably make kills for you on day one to target inactives only.)
If you are killed, your pack cannot kill during the subsequent HIDDEN ROLE phase.
The Wolf Mafia can initially make three kills each day.
This number decreases by one each time they lose a team member.
However, this number will never decrease below zero.

This left me with just the one problem. Pretty much everyone knew the format - and pretty much everyone hated one particular aspect...

Corazon de Leon wrote:Brilliant, seer circle.

Drumstick wrote:I'd hoped there wasn't any protective roles in this, because what has happened previously is that the Mayor position is rotated between Witch Doctor and See and the wolves can't do anything about it (which IMO is slightly unfair and why I excluded the role entirely in the games I ran). A way to still include the WD but leveling it out is to give the WD a finite amount of times they can use the ability.

Victory or Pleasure?

People hate a Seer Circle. It's an old tactic, it makes the game boring for those outside of it, and it cheapens the thrill of a win for an average bystander.

But... Seers are essential. Without them, the village has so little to go on. Wolves don't out themselves. And we're all too long in the tooth to not know amateur wolf patterns like block voting.

So I wanted to include the classic Witch Doctor role to see what the village would do with it - and I thought it was interesting how so many posts, upon realising a circle had formed, basically said "well it's crap but we'll win".

But I also tried to use the clues to make it clear that the Seer role COULDN'T be trusted in exactly the same way as before.

(By the way: the wording of the clues, and their order, was determined before the game began. Karl can verify this. Thanks Karl!)

I didn't want to break the Seer role, but I definitely felt that it was overpowered, particularly if combined with the Witch Doctor. However, there was a precedent for a counter to the Seer: the old 'Alpha' role, who leads the Wolves / Vampires, but is seered as human. (For the purpose of the narrative of this game, the Wolf Mafia were led by a Dogfather - a human leader. Hence why they'd be seered as a Human.)

The Element of Choice

Every role in this game was assigned completely randomly (I used the online generator at random.org, and generated 20 numbers first before every decision to make sure the sequencing seemed reliable, then generated whatever decision I needed). I'm confident this is true of all games here on GR. People don't assign roles based on individuals, it'd be flawed. So all allegiances were predetermined.

I was interested to know how players might react if they did have a choice, though. Often people have expressed a desire to be among the informed minority for the next game, and I wondered: what decision would players make, were it up to them?

If you could pick a side, would you want to play alongside the Humans, even if you knew there was a decent chance they'd think you were a Wolf?

Or would you choose to align yourself with the Wolf Mafia, even if there was a decent chance they'd never even know you were on their side?

And so this, along with my desire to counter the Seer role and compromise the prospect of a circle, led me to create a new role.

The Half-Wolves

Half-Wolf
A role unique to this game. How you play is up to you.
By default, you are a regular human.
As a regular human, you must work with the village to try and identify the Wolf Mafia.
You will win the game if you are alive when all members of the Wolf Mafia have been killed.
You will lose the game if you die.
If another HIDDEN ROLE uses their own role power to identify your own role identity, there is a 50% chance they will see you as a Human, and a 50% chance they will see you as a Wolf. (This will be determined at random by a RNG.)
At any point during the game, you may PM me informing be of your decision to declare for the wolves.
This decision is irreversible.
If you do this, your win and lose conditions change permanently.
You will thus then win the game if at any point the Wolf Mafia includes an equal or greater number of living players than there are remaining living Human villagers.
You will also win the game if any member of the Wolf Mafia is still alive after the HIDDEN ROLES have carried out their actions on Friday 13th.
You will lose the game if all Wolf Mafia members are killed.
The wolves are NOT informed by me of your decision to declare for their group. Nor do you become a Wolf upon declaring for their side.
However, if you have declared for the wolves and they attempt to kill you, they will lose that kill but gain the knowledge that you are on their side.
If you are killed by any player at any time, you will be discovered as a dead Human.

I decided there'd be three ways someone might play this role; you could use the knowledge to help the human cause; declare for the WM and try and cause chaos while getting yourself Wolf killed, or stay quiet and pick whomever looks to be winning. So based on that, I decided there'd be three Half-Wolves.

This would obviously put the Wolf Mafia at an advantage, so to balance things, I decided there'd be lots of Seers. Five, to be exact. (The 50 / 50 clue was intended to refer to the chances of Seering a Half-Wolf either way; I didn't mean for it to reflect the numbers of Wolves and Seers, but it was a neat coincidence!) My thinking was it'd mean the Human side had a more than reasonable amount of power among their ranks, and I figured even if the Seers were overly loose with their intel (which of course they proved to be!) I thought there'd at least be lots of PM circles going on, which everyone publicly states they hate but secretly love to be part of one.

"Stay active" was a warning of an inactive cull on day one instead of regular kills. Some of the other clues were hints about the existence and nature of special roles (one shot = one vigi; someONE could save you = one witch doctor; "Some things never change" = presence of an Alpha role). All the other clues were either hints about the nature of the Half Wolf, or general advice about what game traps not to fall into. (I was fascinated that the "two heads" clue was interpreted as two alphas, a possibility I hadn't even thought of! It was meant to be advice that seering someone twice would be better than once)

Obviously I don't expect anyone to necessarily run the game using Half-Wolves again in the future, but I thought they made for an interesting twist this time out (particularly as many of the other twists have been used already!) But I think the activity levels have proved that there's still an appetite for this game here on the forum, and the base ruleset (perhaps without the Witch Doctor, and obviously fewer Seers) could be easily used to play again. I hope someone decides to run one!

Who did you think played well?

I've got to mention Dangerblade, who played a blinder. He took a gamble and tried to get himself seered, not knowing if it'd work or what he'd be seered as. But it did work, and he was seered as a Wolf, and the resultant chaos totally derailed the thread, and caused Human morale to collapse hugely. Intentional or not, I think it had a big impact on thread activity, which allowed the Wolf Mafia and its Dogfather to carry on quietly, undetected.

He probably didn't mean it, either, but his takeover of the thread coincided with someone actually throwing legitimate suspicion on the Dogfather, TAP. Just as Dangerblade started making his claims, and only slightly before the chaos that ensued, the following had been posted:

I also think there are too many seers for there not to be some hidden mechanic in play mitigating their use... but we have no way of knowing what so we're a bit at the game's mercy in that respect.

Also: only one kill again. Wonder if they went for Mommy on the chance I was bluffing? With this many seers though there is surely another Witch Doctor other than myself (if so, you're doing the right thing in staying hidden!)

I knew about Roonmastor, so did TAP. He seered me.on night one and TAP on night two, then contacted us both when slightly concerned about Mommy. He admitted to not being very active because of life stuff, so I don't know if he seered anyone else.

Either way, Mommy told me over PM that he was expecting Roonmastor to be killed today. How, I don't know.

But it appears nobody paid it any mind!

Oh thank God for that, I'd have been legit furious if ORKN had been the alpha

Actually, that was looked at - it was the reason I had TAP locked up on the second last night. But as TAP pointed out over PM, he let Roon get on with it for some time before dropping the hammer, and with very little else to go on it would have been a big loss to the village to kill someone of his caliber had he been a human. Tiarny's play on the last day was very good, so I begrudgingly can't be annoyed at him for winning. Well played, agent.

I'd like to point out, btw, that the game was...difficult, especially during the first week, for the humans. Mommy's attempts to throw multiple players under the bus(at least me and Ian, that I know about) to people he half-assedly thought were wolves(Hexx forwarded a PM he sent straight through to me) was a legitimately deplorable tactic that did nothing to help the human team and actually hindered us, IMO. He also caused other strong human players such as Moggy(who ended up voting for himself to be lynched, I believe) and Mini E to lose interest in the game.

At least I switched to mcjihge2 at the last moment and didn't vote for TAP. And at least he was one of my main suspicions for ages. But alas, he played well enough that I had nothing concrete at all and as a human it becomes so hard to trust your hunches when faced with some logical reasoning.

If I hadn’t voted for myself, then the other player (I think it was Staydead) would have died instead.

It wasn’t really lack of interest though, more that I couldn’t be arsed spending another day defending myself. It was getting annoying plus it really wasn’t helping the human side - if I had lived it would have just dragged on.

Mommy was infuriating but also very entertaining. I would never trust him with responsibility.

In DML's AYAW IV, a user by the name of Mint sent me a PM to tell me he'd seered me as a Human and he wanted to start creating a network of contacts. Now, what Mint didn't know and couldn't have known, was that I was the Alpha Werewolf in that game. I strung him along for a number of days, directing him who to seer and being his mouthpiece in the game, before eventually mauling his face off.

My point is, just because TAP and Pancake knew about Roonmastor early doors and he didn't die until several days later, that doesn't mean that they can't be the Alpha, especially if they were able to influence the direction of the seerings.

Nicely played, TAP. I hadn't really considered you as the Alpha...

I guessed last night with that "what comes with great power" clue that TAP was alpha. TAP is a mod, he has a responsibility to the the forum, it made sense (to me) that he was the alpha or a human with bad blood.

I always enjoy the games on here, this one was played brilliantly by everyone, thanks for making it so enjoyable for me to read!

This wasn't the intention of the clue - the clues were written before the roles were assigned. The idea was that the Seers had a great power, and thus a responsibility to use it wisely / share their findings with others.

Must’ve been great viewing for the neutral but strawberry float me was this a frustrating game to be involved in.

No fault of Dan’s though - he did a very good job of revealing just enough information to have us wildly speculating, but not enough to influence it either way. I have a few thoughts that I’ll share later on, but cheers for running it mate.

No offence but the clues were just annoying.

But I'm glad it was a pretty normal game in the end and we just got played by the Alpha, thanks for running it!

Having said that, I will reiterate that having an Alpha in a game with a strict time limit is harsh. There's no way TAP could have played the way he did and won without that time limit, the net was tightening (on me, Cora, TAP, mcjihge2) but we ran out of time.
