Are there any words that you see written down that you struggle to say out loud? Or any that you mispronounce when reading?

Hyperbole for me is always a struggle when I see it written. I know it is pronounced “hi per bow lee”, but my brain sees it and just thinks “hyper bowl”.

I also think I struggle to say “drawer” and “brewery”, both of them just feel like a mangled mess in my mouth (no context thread). Nobody has ever told me that I say either word incorrectly though, so I think I do pronounce them properly, they just feel wrong when I say them out loud.

I used to pronounce Swiss Cottage "Swish Cottage" until I was about seventeen. I knew what it was, I just couldn't say it.

I often have trouble with continental town names, such as when i thought Brugge was 'brugger' rather than 'brooj'

Ypres is a tricky one too, as is Berchtesgaden and Scheveningen.

As soon as I read the thread title, before opening it, that word came to mind. It always sounds weird/wrong when I say it.

Also some foreign words -particularly French words - as I can't roll my Rs.

I always read hyperbole as hyper bowl internally, but I'll say it right out loud. The correct pronunciation of hyperbolic doesn't help.

My last name (Hall) is probably the most frequent offender for me, I always have to spell it out to people.

What's tricky about saying wipers?

I much prefer “hyper bowl”. Americans say it like that more often than not and I just think it sounds better.

There is a bizarre kind of admiration I have for the US approach of just shitting all over the intended pronunciation of words and just saying - "nah, we'll say that gooseberry fool how we want thanks!". They're being completely wrong and ignorant when they do it but you've got to admire their balls (no context).

Like the way the Americans say "clique" as "click". :dread:

On topic: as mentioned things like brewery do always sound like a bit of a mess when you say them, I think "library" would be a similar example - the sounds just seem to trip over one another and it comes out as something of a mumble.

I don’t think I have ever thought that library sounded weird when I say it. If I do from now on then I am blaming you!

Yeah, I can't help but want to say "Renumeration" since that makes more sense in my head for some reason.

Sorry! :slol:

I agree on "remuneration" just sounding wrong as well. I think renumeration makes more sense because I equate it with "numerical"

I just overheard some people talking and it reminded me of another one.

Nougat. I know the correct way to say it is “Noo-ga” but in my head it is always “nugget”. I don’t know if that is just a Bristolian/Westcountry way of saying it, but it is firmly lodged in my brain that that is how it is pronounced.

You are correct - it is nugget and I will fight anyone who says otherwise!

Houmous is one I struggle with. I always say "hummus" but get the feeling I'm doing it wrong. "Hoomus" just sounds ridiculous though!

I thought it was "hummus". I am probably wrong though.

I dont have any major issues other than occasionally saying tree instead of three and things like that. I put that mostly down to the fact Im Irish but dont have a strong accent so my accent is trying to reassert itself from time to time.

My wife on the other had has problems with "Swiss", she says "swish", especially funny when shes asking for swish chesse, and "specifically", she says "pacifically". So I look for every oppertunity possibly to say specifically and get her to say it, good times.

I never used to have a problem with that, but I’ve seen so many people moaning about people saying “pacifically” that it has creeped into my brain and now I have no idea if am going to say it correctly. :x
