Today's Word of the Day, courtesy of the Dictionary.com Facebook application, is:

peregrination \pehr-uh-gruh-NAY-shun\, noun:
A traveling from place to place; a wandering.

"In 1890, Lafcadio Hearn settled in Japan after a lifetime of restless, melancholy peregrination."
-- Francine Prose, "Modern Geisha", New York Times, April 23, 2000

Peregrination comes from Latin peregrinatio, from peregrinari, "to stay or travel in foreign countries," from peregre, "in a foreign country, abroad," from per, "through" + ager, "land."

Fascinating stuff, I'm sure you'll agree. Perhaps not something I could use in everyday conversation, but quite interesting nonetheless.

I guess the point of this topic would be about your favourite words, or your least favourite words, or words you wish you could use more often in conversation.

Off the top of my head, I'm particularly fond of facultative just because its fun to say, although I've only ever used it in a scientific context.

Not exactly a favourite word, but after receiving an email my manager asked us what ostensibly meant. I was the only one who knew. :?

I used ostentatious in a conversation at the weekend too, totally unplanned.

One man should not have this much power in this game. Luckily I'm not an ordinary man.

I've started using the word "wootbiscuits" in conversation.

I think I made it up.

I really don't like some of the British colloquialisms like 'shag' and 'snog'.

Pathetic, but only in the original Greek sense of the word.

I called my girlfriend pathetic once, meaning it in that sense... when I explained myself she thought I was talking rubbish and refused to talk to me. :fp:

Gusset, as in the elastic in panties, is a nice word.

Do you every say a word so much it stops sounding like a word?

Word, for example... What a weird word. The more I say word, the less it makes sense.
