Work ethic?

Do you live to work or work to live?

For some people work ethic is everything and I don't care if this makes me sound lazy but to me that's just a load of old bollocks. I work just enough so that I have enough money to live on and have some spare to save for a rainy day (or in case I'm made redundant again as that's always a bit depressing) and I don't have a particularly lavish lifestyle so I don't need vast sums.
I have no problem with people who genuinely enjoy what they do wanting to spend ages at work but I really don't enjoy any part of my job and I'm not alone in this as many people also find themselves in jobs they really don't like.

It just strikes me as odd that as we only have one life we have some people who spend vast swathe's of that life at work doing something they don't like just because of peer pressure and not wanting to look soft. Also most companies now don't give a gooseberry fool about the staff so loyalty and working yourself to death often goes unrewarded anyway so I really fail to see the point.

So, how strong is your work ethic?

I enjoy my work, but I'd much much much MUCH rather not be doing it and living a life of leisure instead. Should probably start buying lottery tickets.

I mostly enjoy my work, but given the chance I'd definitely pack it in and just enjoy doing my own thing. There are so many personal projects I'd love to dedicate time to, as well as just general leisure activities. Office jobs aren't exactly a vocation in the same way as being a doctor is for example.

Also you could have just called me a rude name for no reason and didn't so that's another clue so I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you aren't a serial killer.

In my first ever job I was told I had a bad work ethic. So I quit.

I could be a polite serial killer that just hasn’t yet been caught. But you did catch me out with a lie, I do have a wonderful work ethic when it comes to cleaning up my crime scenes.

I work pretty hard when I'm here. I struggle for motivation if they ask me to do overtime though.

I don't see the point, it's just more stress and the money isn't worth it, I'd rather just stay at home. I have enough to get me by.

I like what my job has become, but there was development to get here.

I’d still rather be rich and retired at 31.

Same. I go in, work hard enough so that I do enough to show that I'm trying and at least try to do what I do well. I then leave immediately on the dot to get home as soon as humanly possible.

I have a desire to do well in my job, to develop and progress, to provide a high quality of service.

However, I wouldn't have to think twice about strawberry floating it off if it were realistically an option.

On the other hand, I would certainly want to continue to work in some form, even if I won £50million on the lottery. It's just that it would be doing something I really cared about, something of a charitable nature that most likely lost money over time.

I don't think my work ethic is great although I work for the government so there is quite a lot of sitting around anyway. I quite my job though, I don't think I'd quit if I could that said I could take a sabbatical to go travelling. Also I get on with some of the people I work with and feel that I'd be a bit bored if I wasn't working.

strawberry float doing any unpaid overtime, but while I'm at work I give everything I can to make sure my output is top notch. I also make sure I'm seen to be taking on extra new things outside of my role to climb my way up the ladder.

I've had 2 decent pay rises in a year now, so it is literally paying off.

This isn't me doing it for some smug oh I'm so hard working me thing - we've got a plan to retire early and this is all part of it.

I think you need to throw yourself into your work, whatever it is. What's the point of clock watching? It just makes you miserable.

For your own benefit, it's good to come home feeling you've achieved something, or are tired because you've tried your best. Yes, if you're unhappy, work towards doing things to help you get away to somewhere better, but still, in the meantime, you live in the day you're in.

Sometimes there is pleasure in the worst jobs if you do them right, rather than sinking into a cycle of dreading turning up, hiding through the day, and rushing home. That can't make anyone happy, because you'll feel you're wasting your life.
