Work scenario, am I in the wrong or do I have a valid point?

As Drumstick said it’s a clear conflict of interest, and your gaffer should be obligated to make sure you aren’t made to do something that could have clear implications to your personal life.

Can't really see an issue with doing the work as long as the installation is correct just let people know that they have to go through customer service. Oddly my neighbours know I'm an electrician they don't bother me with an issues they have.

I think you're being reasonable. I know it's not quite the same thing but I have customers at work who don't know boundaries. I've had people stop me in shops or when I've been out walking my parents dogs to ask me library related questions (hint: if I'm not in the library, I'm not at work. Getting annoyed with me because I won't or can't answer your question isn't going to get you anywhere). I actually had someone ask me to take their library books back for them. They were in town. Like literally 5 minutes walk from the library and got huffy when I wouldn't.

They pretty much disregarded it as a non issue. Tried to spin it in a positive light somehow. I didn't buy it. *Shrugs*

Should have told them how bad it will make the company look when you inevitably tell your neighbours to strawberry float off and stop bothering you.

Absolutely fair to raise this. I bought my flat from a Virgin Broadband engineer, who had the house perfectly wired up for their service.

After we completed the purchase, it made sense to stick with them, but when I called to discuss an installation, I addressed the fact that I specifically didn't want him back in my home, as I knew he was likely the engineer most well located to cover my catchment area.

They said they fully understood and would make sure it wasn't him, so there's precedent for others being cognisant of this issue.

Do the neighbours know you work for this firm already?

If they don't, why should you give up that anonymity for a few small jobs that could be done by one or two of your colleagues?

What if one of your neighbours decides to target you for minor indiscretions (like parking issues or noise'parties etc), and complain to your bosses? Depends how much they value 'public image' and 'corporate brand' etc. Some companies can be very strict on non-work place misdemeanours. Some companies couldn't care less.
