How does Welbeck get into the squad.

Also, knew I should have waited for the official confirmation on Cahill. :x

No Jonjo Shelvey

But that does seem like a lot of fullbacks/wing backs no?

I see full-back Ashley Young been shrewdly listed in the midfielders section in a cunning yet obvious attempt to make the squad seem stronger.

Fuming Wilshere hasn’t been called up. Not even on the standby list.

Think the squad looks alright, lets be honest its not gonna get much better as players who are not in the squad haven't been great or played enough for their club.

Can't be having too many complaints about that squad to be fair. I love that Heaton is on standby instead of Hart despite not playing all season lol.

Guess would be:

Pickford

Walker- Cahill - Stones

Trippier - Dier - Henderson - Rose

Sterling - Kane - Vardy

Though replace Henderson with Alli and it doesn't actually look all that bad?

I hope we don't play no Dier in midfield against Tunisia or Panama.

Should go mental in those games:

Pickford

Walker - Stones - Cahill

Trippier - Alli - Henderson - Rose

Sterling - Kane - Rashford

I don't see what else Southgate had to work with aside from the players he's called up. I'd have probably taken Lallana ahead of Wellbeck. All looks very workmanlike though, no player who really fires the imagination.

It’s probably just because I am old and bitter, but that squad just doesn’t seem to be as full of “stars” as England squads used to. Gazza and Lineker, Shearer and Sheringham, Beckham and Owen, Gerrard and Lampa….well ok maybe it is a good thing that they are not as overhyped as they used to be.

Still, I can’t picture any of those players lifting the World Cup in the way that I used to be able to picture Beckham doing it.

That's probably the best we can do now but Harry Kane is the only world class player there, expect us to go out in the first knockout round.

Edit: We'd be against the winner of group H which looks pretty average too.

It's a sorry state of affairs compared to the teams we had in 1986, 1990, 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Possible worse than the team that got knocked out of the Euros by Iceland too.

I don’t really remember 1986, but I agree on the others. Things just seemed so much more exciting then.

But I accept that it is probably just my age. 2010 kind of killed off England for me, after that I just feel apathetic towards them.

Ultimately as I have said before, its up to the England team themselves to recapture that excitement. They havent suprised a single team at a major tournament in 20+ years.
