That’s a lovely rant, but England didn’t bid for the 2022 World Cup.

England lost out to Russia.

Probably unfairly. Actually almost definitely unfairly.

Probably, FIFA do like back handers.

Russia wasn’t a ridiculous place to host a World Cup though. They like football and at the time were still in relatively good standing on the world stage. I am sure they paid a lot of bribes to get it, but on paper it is not as obviously corrupt as Qatar.

To be fair a Fifa report back in 2010 said Russia was one of the risky bids.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/9201815.stm

At that time Spain/Portugal bid was supposed to be Englands biggest rival bid but money talks.

Then you add all the racial elements. Obviously England and other countries have that but it seems more widespread in Russia.

It doesn’t help that clubs get fined more when cats enter the pitch rather than racist chanting.

The rotation policy also means it's more likely to go to the US because European countries can't continuously bid, and there's really only 3 countries in North America that could conceivably host the World Cup

Do you mean the rotation policy where they went round the continents and said which one had to host the World Cup?

That was discontinued, and now it's just that the past two hosting continents can't bid. So for 2026 it meant Europe (Russia 2018) and Qatar (2022) can't bid. For 2030, Asia and North America can't bid.

But for 2026, anyone from North America, South America, Africa, Oceania and Antarctica* could had bid I think.

As someone has mentioned, the 2030 one is the WC centenary year so they may go for that joint Uruguay bid based on that. Surely, surely the next time it comes to Europe it should be us? Though if we don't get 2030, I can see Australia eventually getting it or maybe China in 2034.

*Well if Qatar can have it...

England lost out to Russia.

But that's the whole point: the UK, with almost all the infrastructure already in place can't host it for what will now be 60 years, whereas a place like Qatar - the least ideal location this side of Iraq - can.

Well no, the point is that England can’t win a bid against Qatar if it doesn’t bid against Qatar.

We all agree that Qatar being chosen was corrupt as hell, but it has next to nothing to do with England.

For 2022, the bidding countries were:

Qatar
Australia
Japan
South Korea
USA

It was fair enough to rule out Japan/South Korea (they had only just hosted it!) and the USA had hosted it not so long before. Australia should have won it easily.

Exactly, so come 2046/50 one of them will probably be hosting it again

We should go the whole way though and get the Republic in on any bid. Games in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland would be fantastic.

That’s probably the only issue.

Europe has 16 spots in a 48 team World Cup. That will go down to 12 probably if we bid with three other teams.

South America has 6 from 10 spots to go through in a 48 team World Cup. So it’s not going to make a massive difference to the South American group. Argentina and Uruguay tend to qualify always. So you left with 7 teams playing for 3 spots.

I think it would have to be a England, Wales, Scotland bid really. 4 would be too much.

The qualification places available is expected to be as follows: Europe 16 teams; Africa 9; Asia 8.5, South America 6, Concacaf 6.5, Oceania 1 and, in normal circumstance, one spot for the host nation.

It will be decided at FIFA Congress in June 2019 whether the three host nations all receive automatic qualification for the tournament. It is expected USA will but Canada has only ever played at one World Cup, so their place is not a straightforward decision for those in power.

So apparently it’s not clear cut if Canada or Mexico get a spot.

https://www.theguardian.com/football/20 ... politician

Russian women should avoid sex with non-white foreign men during the football World Cup because they could become single mothers to mixed-race children, a senior lawmaker in Moscow said on Wednesday.

Even when Russian women marry foreigners the relationships often end badly, said Tamara Pletnyova, head of parliament’s committee for families, women and children. Women are often stranded abroad or in Russia but unable to get their children back, she said.

Going to be a fun month.

Is this some kind of alternate reality where Croke Park is in the UK? ;)

A UK bid would be cool, but I can't see the Scots wanting any part of it. An England bid would be better, but the we all know FIFA doesn't like England and The FA, so I'd imagine the 'anniversary' element of Uruguay's bid would give them a good reason not to award it to us.

The USA and Mexico usually qualify anyway, it would be fairer to let Canada have the automatic spot.

My bad, I meant Windsor Park.

There was talk of a Celtic Nations bid for Euro 2020, but when UEFA realised that it was the only serious bid they went with the multiple countries option.

I think the issue with a UK bid actually lies with the FA - Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland are under absolutely no illusion that they'll need to team up with others to put forward a serious bid, but England don't actually need anyone else to go ahead with a pitch for a major tournament. Off the top of my head St. James Park, Stadium of Light, Old Trafford, Etihad, Anfield, New Goodison, Villa Park, Wembley, Tottenham's new stadium, The Emirates, Stamford Bridge and the rebuilt Ashton Gate would make a tournament work across the whole country with minimum work required, so there's no need to use any of the four or five usable stadiums that are located elsewhere in the UK.

It’d need to be revamped again in order to accommodate a World Cup game. AG is currently a 27k capacity, I think FIFA require 40k capacity.

There was a mooted redesign to make it world cup usable for the 2018 bid wasn't there? That's the only reason it came into my head. You'd just sub that out for the imaginatively named and 66,000 capacity London Stadium.

There's also Twickenham available, and Crawley Town's Checkatrade Stadium.

The 2018 bid was based on Bristol City’s plans to move to a stadium that was going to be built in a new location. That all fell through because people liked to walk their dogs on a patch of wasteland and we ended up just building a couple of new stands at AG.

I am sure that if England won a World Cup bid that Bristol City Council would quickly approve further expansion of AG, but who knows!
