If she was so awful, she wouldn't be in every single game! She's a fan favourite for a reason. It just wouldn't be PW, with her driving Edgeworth up the wall.

Mass Effect and Assasins Creed are two very good examples of how an awesome story can save a game with flawed mechanics. I enjoyed both these games, despite the fact I'll moan about how the design was messed up.

Actually, those would be your "Colossal Caves" and your "Zorks". They wouldn't really have that much story either, basically being a scavenger hunt inside a network of caves in search of points. (Most) People don't play 50 hour games in one sitting. You'll find any game which has 49 hours of "unnecessary" levelling up is a bad RPG, and you won't find many caring about the other hour anyway.

It was a bad comparison, as most good RPGs have a lot more going on than just the bits in the FMVs.

Story told during in-game cutscenes is just badly rendered FMV's.

I did say that most Final Fantasies aren't actually that bad several posts back, though I must append that personally, I do often find jRPG game mechanics unsatisfying, and consider this to be why I finish so few that I play.

Oh yeah, totally agree. Some of my all-time favourite games are amazing stories with crap mechanics. I'm just saying that not all games need some kind of motivation, and I'd personally like it if more games eschewed all the story stuff and concentrated on the gameplay, because few do. Those which do are generally widely celebrated - hello, Geometry Wars 2.

Oh, you were so close. Assassin's Creed has a woeful story whose faux-profundity is laughable. And the ending is a bad joke.

Mass Effect, though - thumbs way, way up.

I was playing the end of Assassin's Creed in utter disbelief that the story could nose-dive that quickly. It was bad to start with ffs :lol:

I understand what a cliffhanger is it was just part of a god awful story, the basic mechanics of the game were very fun but equally repetitive.
