Possibly. But they're both there as they are to serve a purpose in the storyline. So they're not "bad characters" as such. Just purposely unlikeable ones.

Though you might argue that if a game can't provide the player with a reason to play it other than to watch the story unfold, you could legitmately ask why SquareEnix don't just make it a movie instead.

Fortunately the gameplay isn't THAT bad. It could usually just about support itself without the story, though not for the hours upon hours you'll need to pour in to finish your average RPG.

I have an annoying tendency to rush through games just to know the whole story, and how it ends. Sometimes this means i miss out on all the gameplay possibilities, and might not enjoy the game as much as i could.
